PHD - Open Source Linux Kernel Engineer (BB-4E783)

Found in: Talent UK

Description:
The team in the UK Research Centre drives forward the support for HiSilicon’s ARM64 server SoCs in the mainline Linux kernel. We focus on the next generation Kunpeng processors, high-end devices targeting similar markets to Xeon (Cloud / Enterprise etc). We work directly with the open source community, to provide the best possible support for our hardware platforms, including in all the major commercial Linux Distributions. We interact closely with the wider project team, primarily in China but also the growing hardware architecture teams in the UK, and internal customers within Huawei to gather business requirements and use them to drive forward the architecture, implementation and hardware / software improvements. HiSilicon’s hardware is often industry leading so there are many opportunities for innovation. The Open Source / Linux kernel development field, is one in which experienced talent is hard to find against a fast growing requirement. As a major contributor to this ecosystem (e.g. Huawei was the top patch contributor to the 5.10 kernel cycle), to help overcome this future bottleneck, we are looking to develop the next generation of talent, with a view that those starting today will hold key roles in the community in the medium term (reviewers / maintainers). To that end, this role would initially involve working closely with one of our existing experienced team members, providing a suitable environment for the candidate to develop skills and knowledge, whilst also contributing to an existing focus area. The expectation is the candidate would gradually transition to a more independent role, proposing and driving forwards their own projects and agenda.Examples of current focus areas of the team include; Virtualization of Shared Virtual Addressing for efficient use of domain specific accelerators within user-space processes.IOMMU performance improvements (enhance all architectures)SAS storage performance (particularly around blk-mq)ARM64 vCPU hotplug support for virtualization and container usecasesSupport for upcoming CXL and PCIE features.CPU Cluster Scheduling and memory placement in complex NUMA systemsThe team also has a role in establishing collaborations beyond Huawei, both commercial and academic, to enhance future platforms and drive potential business use cases.Role & Responsibilities:As mentioned above, for this role we are looking to develop / mentor future talent alongside delivering more specific features to support our products. This person needs to be:Keen to learn, both from team members and by direct investigation of the code.Enthusiastic about working within the open source community and able to shine within that environment.Self-motivated and able to work independently. Able to work efficiently in a multi-cultural, multi-site, multi-language and rapidly changing environment. Able to grasp end to end platform design and understand the relevance to low level components. An excellent communicator (Chinese Language is a bonus, but not necessary or common in the existing team).Happy to engage in reviewing alongside writing code as both are central parts of the role. Possible areas of academic focus:Computer ArchitectureSoftware (algorithms, architecture, compilers and similar)A software heavy topic in another area, or a clear interest in software shown outside of PhD. Skills:Software development experience, either as part of PhD of via other routes.Understanding of coding practice and ability to rapidly understand existing code. However, kernel code has its own unique idioms and style and tooling, so we would expect some ramp up timeC or similar language preferred.Existing of experience of kernel coding, or involvement in another open source project would be a plus point, but is not a requirement.Ability to concisely convey an idea with clear supporting evidence. Formal requirements:PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a similar subject. What we offer 33 days annual leave entitlement per year (including UK public holidays)Group Personal PensionLife insurancePrivate medical insuranceMedical expense claim schemeEmployee Assistance ProgramCycle to work scheme Company sports club and social eventsCorporate retail discountsFlexible workingAdditional time off for learning and development
