Trim Development Engineering Apprentice (BB-A8BBF)

Main Function / Purpose of job:

The primary role is to support the UK Trim Development Manager, the trim development teams in UK and Europe, and other business teams in the creation of patterns and process for trimmed components ensuring all programme and component attribute and/or performance targets have been met or exceeded. As part of this support, you will be expected to learn new skills and processes, that enable you to become a Trim Development Engineer.

Main missions and results:

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you will be required to study towards a Level 6 Product design and development engineer degree qualification in line with Apprenticeship standards.

Skills to learn:

  • Sewing, Patterning, Gerber digitising, trimming, cutting, Spraying, lamination, splitting and skiving of leather, materials, adhesive knowledge, Trim related software and 3D printing.
  • Manage part development on own projects. Providing status when required on:
  • Part Feasibility, Pattern development status, Digitising status, Pattern release status, Master and limit part status, Process definition and capture, Training status of manufacturing team, Status current Tact and process times vs Target.
  • Work with Trim Development teams and other departments to improve own trimming and patterning skills and knowledge of trimming processes as required.
  • Work on projects that both enhance and improve skills of Engineer whilst enabling department to meet deliverables.
  • Work with Trim Development teams to develop patterns and process to enable parts to be trimmed to the defined cost, quality, and Tact time targets.
  • Provide clear written and verbal feedback on exact status of workload, projects, and part status.
  • Plan, organise, and conduct activities working directly with the Trim Development teams in an effective manner working towards achieving successful introduction of Trim Components.
  • Support engineering meetings to understand the exact requirements for any trim component. Including, but not limited to; testing requirements, total delivered cost, risks, and quality and craftsmanship requirements.
  • Support Cad review(s) on relevant projects to ascertain trim feasibility or resolve engineering issues.
  • Support and assist department in project and vehicle delivery workload.
  • Contribute to Trim Control plans and FMEA documents.
  • Accurately record all pattern and process data in line with Trim Development process.
  • Utilise database information in line with relevant legislation and best practice.
  • Support with the pattern and data release process within Trim Development.
  • Support the team in the production of early patterns from SLA, and Pre tool components for early cost analysis, and engineering feasibility.
  • Complete and support engineering release packs where required.
  • Support TDC and continuous improvement elements on assigned projects.
  • Provide feedback to Engineering on lessons learnt and continuous improvements.


  • Ensure that workshop is safe and tidy.
  • Attend Project, Team, One-One and departmental meetings as required.
  • Liaison with external suppliers on technical issues
  • Liaison with internal departments as required
  • Provide continuous improvement on Trimming Methods and process to business.
  • Ensure all components and trimmed parts are labelled and stored correctly, so that trimmed components are not damaged, or can be used on incorrect projects
  • Ensure all machinery and tools required are stored, maintained and safe for use.
  • Be prepared to support projects across different sites and locations.

  • Prepared to work on projects and processes outside normal scope of work to assist the department.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you will be required to study towards a Level 6 Product design and development engineer degree qualification in line with Apprenticeship standards.

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Mathematics, English and a Science or an Engineering related subject.
  • A Levels at grade C or above in both a Mathematical based subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC.
  • Advanced computer skills including MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • A willingness to learn and embrace new techniques and new technologies related to the design and development of trim components.
  • High levels of self-management and accuracy throughout all projects.
  • Must be able to work well across multiple teams within Europe.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to get the task completed.
  • Must be able to manage several multiple tasks that are occurring at the same time.
