We are looking for an engaging and passionate individual to join our Young Persons Shared Accommodation service in Gwent. The service supports homeless young people aged 18- 25. This service enables young people to participate fully in their communities and improve their opportunities in life through education, training, employment and social change. It provides these incredible individuals, who have been vulnerably housed, rough sleeping, in temporary accommodation and existing supported housing services, with an affordable tenancy in a shared accommodation. What is great about the role?

The Youth and Community Development Officer will mainly work with young people across Newport, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire & Torfaen aged 18-25 with the aim of creating innovative, meaningful and sustainable peer support networks within their communities. You will help young people to take a psychologically informed approach to develop confidence, improve decision making, reduce isolation and overcome barriers that result in low self-esteem and poor emotional health. This is an exciting opportunity to be really creative as this is a new service and a new approach to supporting young people who would otherwise not be able to afford or find a property for themselves.

We have a temporary position available for 37 hours per week until 31 March 2022

The working hours and days are predominantly Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, but flexibility is required to deal with emergencies and appointments

We offer a holiday entitlement of 25 days plus bank holidays, sick pay and excellent pension options

You need to be able to drive and have access to a vehicle for this role and you will also require an Enhanced DBS check, which we pay for.

Day to Day Duties:

As a Youth and Community Development officer your day will consist of:

  • Mentoring Young people to engage in projects or activities
  • To co-produce groups and engagement opportunities with young people
  • To work in a psychologically informed way, with a compassionate & empathic nature
  • To engage and build trusting relationships in order to achieve positive outcomes
  • To Identify and develop opportunities for partnership work with local authorities and voluntary agencies
  • Work with external agencies and signpost the people we support to the appropriate services suited to their needs
  • Use digital/social media to support projects and social networks amongst young people.
  • You will work with a range of different personalities and behaviours so you will need to be able to adapt your approach to engage with a diverse cliental. You will be empathetic and caring with the ability to put people at ease without being judgemental and be assertive when necessary with the ability to work calmly and patiently in stressful situations.
