To promote a flexible workforce, the University will consider applications from individuals seeking full time, part time, job share, or term time only working arrangements.
The Computer Science Department, Aberystwyth University, is a world-class research and education centre. It is an internationally recognised centre of excellence and students' choice for the study of computer science.
We are looking to recruit a Research Assistant to work on research projects in collaboration with Welsh industries on Geographical Data and Earth Observation for Monitoring (GEOM), which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government. Activities will centre around systems to analyse data captured using a variety of mechanisms (including drones and ground-based robots, as well as satellite data) and extract relevant information depending on the exact nature of the projects. The remit of GEOM is spatial data, linked to other relevant aspects such as longitudinal studies and biological and geographical systems.
The post holder will design and develop embedded systems to capture, process and/or analyse data that pertains to the specific projects involved. An example of such an embedded system could be an Arduino with a few sensors to be mounted on a fix-wing aircraft. The post-holder would be required to design the system based on a specification by deciding what the correct components are and building the system as well as developing the necessary software to extract the data from the sensors and store, send, process, etc., this data.
The post holder will also be responsible for interacting with partners of the project, in particular at the data acquisition stage and experimentation methodology. In particular, the systems might need to interact with other software packages developed as part of the project by other members of the team.
