Band 2 Biomedical Support Worker - Cellular Pathology


Biomedical Support Worker Band 2 An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated, Biomedical Support Worker, Band 2 to join the Cellular Pathology Team at St George's Hospital, Tooting.


This post will offer successful applicants the opportunity to support the Trusts cancer & diagnostics testing, coupled with other duties including preparing samples for analysis, inputting patient data, maintaining lab equipment and dealing with enquiries.


Duties will include maintaining laboratory equipment, aiding laboratory staff in some aspects of technical work, entry of patient data onto the pathology computer system and assisting medical staff with diagnostic tissue handling of operative specimens.

Good literacy, biological science, numeracy and communication skills are required; keyboard skills would be an advantage.

You should have the ability to work as part of a team and to manage your own workload. Previous experience of medical terminology and data entry.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • To work in a designated area of the department under the supervision of a section leader but will organise own work tasks or activities.
  • To understand and perform work in accordance with the standard operational policies using basic theoretical knowledge.
  • Ensure that documentation is maintained to the SWL Pathology standard (including electronic records).
  • Be able to solve basic problems within work area and refer unresolved problems to a more senior member of staff.
  • To prepare specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • To contribute towards a culture of quality in the department and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within the department consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation.
Working Relationships/Communications

  • To demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.
  • Contribute towards sharing good practice within the department and Trust wide.
  • To promote a positive image of the Trust at all times.
  • To work cohesively with all members of the department team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times.
  • Communicates any difficulties, problems, accidents or incidents affecting the department to a section leader/manager promptly.
  • To provide and receive routine information orally to inform work colleagues or external contacts e.g. other departments, G.P.'s or visitors to the department.
  • To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the laboratory.
