Salary:
Research Assistant:
£30,619 to £32,411 per annum
Research Associate:
£33,348 to £35,308 per annum

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant/Associate with well-developed quantitative data analysis skills to join a research project using "big data" to investigate the role of diet and lifestyle in cancer risk and survival, assisting with data preparation, statistical analysis, and dissemination of findings.
The CALIPER project is investigating whether aspects of diet and lifestyle are associated with risk of developing cancer and, in those who have cancer, survival.
You will work alongside academics and researchers at Newcastle and Glasgow Universities to deliver the project; the collaboration has already resulted in a number of conference abstracts and papers in high quality journals.
Applicants should have at least 2 years research experience, including substantial experience of analysing quantitative data. Excellent written and spoken communication skills are essential. A PhD in a relevant field is required for appointment at associate level.Key Accountabilities
Cleaning, preparing and analysing data from UK Biobank
Undertaking rapid reviews of relevant literature to support and inform the project
Participating in project meetings
Presenting scientific work at internal and external meetings and conferences
Contributing to drafting scientific papers and actively participating in other dissemination activities
Developing effective working relationships with other project staff and collaborators
Contributing to the supervision of undergraduate and post-graduate projects & dissertations
Participating in activities of the Population Health Research Institute, the Human Nutrition Research Centre, and the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer
Undertaking other reasonable duties as required
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
At least 2 years health-related research experience
Significant experience of statistical or epidemiological analysis of quantitative data
Experience of working within multi-disciplinary or multi-centre teams
Proven organisational skills
Excellent written and spoken communication skills
Track record of disseminating research findings, including presenting at conferences and publishing papers (appropriate for career stage)
Desirable
Experience of using Stata or R for data analysis
Experience of analysing "big data" (e.g. UK Biobank, routine health service data, CPRD)
Knowledge or experience of survival analysis
Knowledge or experience of analysis of diet, nutrition or lifestyle data
Knowledge of cancer epidemiology
Experience of conducting systematic reviews
Attributes and Behaviours
Ability to work independently as well as working as a supportive team member
Demonstrable ability to carry out research project work within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard

Qualifications:
For appointment at associate level, a PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or a related field with a strong quantitative component.
Desirable
For appointment at assistant level, working towards a PhD in a relevant field would be a significant advantage
