Fitter required to carry out maintenance tasks as required.


Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary
The post holder will carry out scheduled maintenance operations and repairs on all Council vehicles, plant and equipment. The post-holder will be expected to work on a wide range of vehicles including light commercial and specialist vehicles.


Duties and Responsibilities

1. Repair and maintenance of light and heavy goods vehicles, plant and machinery i.e. light vans and lorries, specialist vehicles such as road sweepers, goods and complex vehicles including refuse lorries and plant including excavators and grass maintenance equipment.


2. Attend roadside breakdowns and undertake appropriate repairs to vehicle, undertake roadside repairs to render vehicle road-worthy or recover to agreed location.


3. Carry out all repairs and maintenance to a high standard of workmanship ensuring all activities are carried out in accordance with current legislation, Council policies and appropriate standards including appropriate external standards.


4. Work in confined spaces and at height, when required to effect repairs and maintenance to equipment on vehicles; e.g. working inside vehicle body, at height or in-service pits.


5. Road test of vehicles in accordance with licence held and make recommendations to Garage Manager on safety and road worthiness of vehicles.


6. Carry out maintenance works on all fleet vehicles as necessary and as directed by the Garage Manager.


7. Make recommendations to Garage Manager on parts/spares and repairs required to undertake cost-effective repairs to vehicles/plant.


1. Carry out detailed Safety Inspections, MOT pre-inspections and servicing on all vehicles, present vehicles for MOT testing, or 3rd Party repairers, as appropriate.


2. Carry out fault diagnostics on a wide range of specialist vehicle control systems, using specialised equipment and diagnostic tools to measure performance and identify repairs needed and adjust vehicle systems to ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Contract length: 7 months

From £14.40 per hour
