This lively and varied post requires a self-starter who can multi-task work to deadlines and take Initiative.

You must have a significant interest in sustainability, decarbonising buildings and enabling businesses to achieve net zero within the context of prototyping, hacking and making.


You will work in the team of Advanced Hackspace Fellows to support the community of entrepreneurial hackers and makers at the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace where you will be supporting the Better Futures Programme, a Shared Prosperity Fund initiative supporting the growth of London-based cleantech businesses.


The role is varied ranging from support, hands-on making, through to design of sophisticated prototypes for entrepreneurs and external partners working within the Hackspace in the mechanical, electrical workshops, and biological engineering lab space.


Duties and responsibilities:


  • You will help nurture and support our members, especially startups and SMEs on the Better Futures Programme in prototyping and project development, providing technical guidance and assistance.
  • You will help develop and run new prototype skills building activities/programmes for existing and prospective new ICAH members (online or inperson events designed to engage and upskill workshops, training and hackathons).
  • You will assist the smooth daytoday operation of the facility to ensure equipment, materials and resources are used safely and accurately.

Essential requirements:


You should have:

  • A PhD in Engineering or equivalent knowledge and skills
  • Experience with metal working and wood working machinery including use of lathes and mills, saws and other mechanical equipment
  • Experience in teaching safe use of equipment and principles of machining and fabrication in a workshop environment.
  • Experience of working in an education environment
  • Experience with multidisciplinary research
  • Experience of working in a workshop environment or equivalent
  • Experience working with researchers or in an R&D environment
  • Experience of contributing innovative ideas in order to solve technical problems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal with confidential matters with discretion

This is a full time, fixed term position for 12 months and based at White City Campus.
