Assistant Buyer

Rail / Civil Engineering

Location - Barnsley

An exciting opportunity for an Assistant Buyer to join the central procurement team, assisting with the purchase of goods, materials, plant and services to ensure that the company operational needs are met, taking into account price, quality and delivery and to ensure continuity of supply.

Business Unit
A busy and fast paced procurement and supply chain environment supporting our framework and project teams throughout the UK.

The central procurement team based in Barnsley is lead by our Head of Procurement and Supply Chain and is made up of a team of Assistant Buyers, Buyers, Senior Buyers and Supply Chain Managers.

The team are responsible for our overall procurement strategy and day to day procurement of plant and materials, supporting a variety of contracts in sectors including rail, civil engineering, environmental, M&E etc.


The Role
As Assistant Buyer you will form a key part of the central procurement team.

Reporting to the Buyer, you will understand the importance of, and support the ongoing development and maintenance of positive key relationships with key partners/suppliers.

You will provide valuable assistance in the day to day procurement of plant and materials, with responsibilities including but not limited to:


  • Reviewing requisitions, sourcing materials and plant, negotiation and placement of orders in line with business and operating procedures and to time and cost.
  • Negotiating to produce discounts in line with the ethos of 'Challenge Everything'
  • Completion of invoice queries and order amendments in a timely fashion.
  • Accurate recording, maintaining and updating of key information including but not limited to;
- waste saving reports,
- everyday savings and mitigated losses,

  • Procurement Information Bulletin,
- weekly issues.

  • Ensuring compliance with all processes and protocols within your job remit.
  • Administrating of Subcontract orders/Vendor Assessments and Insurances.
  • Review and process Q&O Orders.
  • Other tasks as may from time to time be deemed necessary and are authorised by line managers.

Requirements:

To excel in this role, you will have previous experience as an Assistant Buyer procuring a diverse

range of plant and materials in a Construction environment.

  • Good communication and observational skills are essential.
  • Demonstration of previous purchasing experience is required.
  • Experience specifically in Rail/Civil Engineering environment would be beneficial but not essential.
  • The ability to think and act proactively.
  • Effective personal, coordinating and organising skills
  • Well organised with an outgoing personality.
  • They must be able to work independently and prioritise job duties.
  • Be Results focused.
  • Must have CIPS / be already undertaking CIPS or have demonstrable compensatory experience.
