Job summary:
Do you want to work in one of the most interesting, varied and fast-paced departments in Whitehall, advising Ministers and writing tomorrow's news headlines?
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is looking for a Press Officer to join its mission to bring together business experts and world-class trade negotiators to support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.
The role is challenging and wide-ranging, from crafting punchy press products, to supporting ministerial visits and interviews, or briefing journalists on breaking news stories as they happen.
You will be part of a busy and enthusiastic press office team who work closely with Special Advisers, Private Office and policy officials on reactive and proactive media.
As a member of DBT's Press Office team, you will play an active role in building support for our business and trade strategy and protecting the department's reputation.
You will also be encouraged to spot opportunities for positive features, and human interest stories from across the UK to land positive stories in consumer media and regional titles, including in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland media.

Job description:
- Be part of a team who plan and deliver communications that cut through both at home and abroad on Ministerial events such as domestic and overseas visits, speaking engagements and interview opportunities.
- Handle reactive enquiries and rebuttals effectively, including briefing senior political and economic journalists on the phone to shape tomorrow's news.
- Craft firstclass content for social media platforms for the Department's ministers and corporate channels.
- Support on highprofile announcements and general work of Press Office including participating in an outofhours duty rota, for which you will be paid overtime.
- Monitor and evaluate coverage to ensure objectives are being met and DBT's key messages are landing well with our key audiences.
Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.
DIT will cover travel costs/expenses to any office which is not your usual office location in line with departmental expenses policy.
Person specification:
Essential Criteria
- Proven news sense, excellent judgement, political nous and outstanding internal and external communication skills.
- Superb written English and experience of delivering highclass media products to short deadlines on modern media platforms from newspapers to Twitter.
- Experience of working in a fastpaced media team, with highly effective proactive and reactive media handling skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of delivering highprofile media moments in the UK or international markets.
- Experience of running social media channels for individuals or organisations.
