Job description
We are looking for Human Factors Consultants to join us here at Defence, Equipment and Support (DE&S).

As part of our team you will have a significant effect on our Armed Forces; optimising their performance by ensuring the equipment we procure considers human capabilities, limitations, and characteristics, and influencing the systems being developed for them.

This is also an opportunity to work as part of a large internal Human Factors Integration (HFI) team to scope, manage and deliver HFI tasks.

Our HFI Consultants enjoy the variation afforded in their roles, managing projects at differing stages of the acquisition lifecycle, across each of the armed services, and working with a wide range of military and civilian stakeholders.

Quote - Tammy (Level 4 HFI Specialist)
- "I enjoy working at DE&S because of the rewarding nature of the work we do and the importance of the service we provide to our armed forces. Working day to day with our military end-users is incredibly rewarding, and continuously reminds me of the importance of doing Human Factors well on projects to help ensure our serving personnel are as safe and effective as possible."_

HFI Consultants can choose their permanent duty station (PDS) from the list below:
MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol, BS34 8JH.
Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX.

Responsibilities
Quote - Laird (Level 4 HFI Specialist)
- "There are many reasons why I enjoy working at DE&S but two stand out. Firstly, the variety of work we do. The HFI team is called upon to support a hugely diverse portfolio of projects in the Land, Air, Maritime and Joint domains. Projects vary in size from individual items of equipment to systems of systems and complete platforms. There's never a dull moment. Secondly, my colleagues. The HFI team includes a good mix of experience and expertise. We share information and learn from each other; most importantly, we don't take ourselves too seriously and find time to have a laugh."_

The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:

As a Human Factors Integration (HFI) Consultant within Defence, Equipment and Support (DE&S), you will work closely with project teams, the user community and industry suppliers to ensure the developing solution meets our customers' needs.

Engaging with Project Teams, you will identify, scope and deliver the required level of HFI support within the approved time and budget, while supporting one or more projects in parallel.

You will conduct HFI management and technical activities through all stages of the engineering lifecycle, with typical activities including, but not limited to: conducting Human Factors assessments to identify HFI considerations; developing contractual HFI Requirements; writing HFI Plans; and assuring supplier HFI activities and trials.

Your skills in Human Factors and HFI, in conjunction with your strong interpersonal skills, will see you forming collaborative working relationships with a broad range of military and non-military stakeholders.

In addition to project delivery, you will also play an active part in maintaining and updating the HFI policy, standards and guidance portfolio, as well as wider team development activities, including capturing lessons learnt and benefits management.

These roles may require short periods of detached duty in the UK and internationally, which could involve overnight stays.
