Description of role:


The Thermal Processing Technologies (TPT) team develops and delivers solutions for industry related to brazing, diffusion bonding, powder metallurgy and heat treatment processes.

In support of this, we operate a range of furnaces and laboratory-based equipment, including vacuum, air and diffusion bonding furnaces, as part of our process development capability.


Our projects allow us to explore the use of many engineering materials including aluminium alloys, titanium alloys, nickel based superalloys, special steels, copper alloys, ceramics, refractory metals and metal matrix composites (MMCs).

We work with and support our clients in the aerospace, nuclear, automotive, oil & gas, medical and power generation sectors.

Previous experience of working with these materials, particularly associated with vacuum brazing, torch brazing, diffusion bonding and furnace-based heat treatments is desirable, along with a strong practical and problem solving background.

We are recruiting for a Project Leader with the level dependant on qualifications and skill. The role will involve bidding on and delivering a wide variety of technical projects.

These range from blue-sky innovation projects, single client projects to large publicly funded projects, typically helping our clients to solve issues, develop manufacturing processes or to support the evolution of new concepts.

These activities will require co-ordinating work across the wider TWI business to achieve the project goals.

The successful applicant's main duties and responsibilities would include:


  • Managing projects within agreed budgets and timescales
  • Defining processing and characterisation work to be completed, and analysing the results
  • Producing technical reports and/or research papers arising from project work
  • Responding to technical enquiries from clients with clear, accurate, comprehensive information
  • Visiting clients, presenting to clients, and hosting client visits to TWI
  • Identifying and developing business opportunities
  • Understanding customers' requirements, accurately costing the effort required and writing detailed proposals and project reports
  • Working with colleagues to bid for publically funded research projects
  • Maintaining and developing your own technical expertise and reputation
  • Carrying out practical labbased activities as and when required

Travel:


This position may require some travel within the UK, Europe and occasionally further afield to attend project meetings and to develop single client business, as and when required.


Security clearance:


The ability to attain UK security clearance will be beneficial in this role as it will allow access to a greater range of project work and customers.
