Job description:

Economics Group

The Economics Group leads HM Treasury's analysis of developments in the UK economy and advises ministers on the implications for the Government's economic strategy.

It provides expert economic analysis and advice for Ministers. The Group's data hub is transforming how the Treasury uses data across its entire business.

The Group collaborates with external experts on the UK economy, including the Bank of England, Office for Budget Responsibility and leading academics.

Economics Group provides support for the UK Government's economics and social research professions, including running centralised recruitment and the annual conferences.

The Data Science Hub
To do this, the Hub has established two branches:

  • Data Management
  • branch that will support the department in developing its data management capability, designing and implementing data flows for analytics and operational systems, setting best practice and standards, and championing data engineering across the department. The branch will also ensure that officials at all levels of expertise have access to learning and development opportunities.
-
Advanced Analytics - a team with a flexible pool of data scientists who can identify, initiate, and support high-value data science projects across the department's responsibilities.

As a Data Strategy and Management Lead, you'll be in right at the start of the journey, helping to define and deliver a programme of work building the department's data capability, aligns current data practices with cross-governmental standards, and runs HMT's AI and Economic Data Innovation Fund secretariats.

About the role

The role is part of a team that will fundamentally change how the department approaches analysis; from how it acquires data, how it analyses data to how it shares it.

We are a growing team that packs a punch - it isn't often that you get to join a transformational team at the start of its journey.

The team already has a long list of actions, from shaping policy on how we exploit AI within the department, to leading L&D programmes of over a thousand policy professionals.

You'll work closely with head of data management and the chief data officer - in approaching how to make sense of what data the department consume, and then guiding them through a plan to improve it.

You'll be crucial in the distribution of the allocation of innovation funds, like the Economic Data Innovation Fund, which has successfully allocated over 10m over the past few years.

The challenges are broad, but so are the development opportunities, both technical as we scale our data engineering capability and in policy, as we mature our approaches in the department.

This isn't just your average data role.

It's a role that will broaden your experience across a gamut of professions and we will tailor the work around you, playing to both your strengths and your ambitions.

Essential requirements:

  • An interest in data, a datarelated discipline, or analysis
  • Organised and a good multitasker, with the ability
