The Head of Nursing role at MREH AND UDHM is a unique opportunity for an outstanding nurse leader.


We are looking for a talented, passionate and experienced nurse leader who can demonstrate strong clinical and strategic leadership, with the ability to communicate effectively across multi-professional boundaries as well as create an enviable culture of caring and compassion.

The post holder will be based at both Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the University Dental Hospital of Manchester and will be required to work across all Trust sites if required.


You will be responsible for leading patient safety, quality of care, patient and staff experience and delivering the highest standard of care in line with the MFT Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Strategy.


The post holder needs to have a comprehensive understanding of the changing NHS environment and the challenges it faces, and the role and contribution nurses and AHPs can make.


The post holder needs to have a commitment to improving patient services, by providing an environment that sustains performance and focuses on continuous quality improvement.


Providing leadership and experience to manage and deliver on the complex and changing workload, which will include the need to identify and resolve conflicting priorities within tight timescales will be expected.


Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Head of Nursing will be the professional lead for nursing across Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) and the University Dental Hospital of Manchester (UDHM) providing visible leadership across, monitoring and maintaining professional high standards.


S/he will be an innovative and dynamic practitioner committed to improving the patient/client experience, improving standards of care and services, commanding the confidence of colleagues cross MREH, UDHM and the Trust.


S/he will set clear expectations and lead the delivery of nursing and AHP objectives set by the Director of Nursing, MREH AND UDHM and MFT Group.

S/he will demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering a world-class service for patients/clients.


Working collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and MREH/ UDHM senior nursing teams, s/he will lead and support across MREH/ UDHM quality & patient experience including measurement and analysis of nursing and AHP metrics, improvement methodology, and the accreditation processes.

S/he will act as a catalyst for change for the delivery of safe high quality clinical care.


S/he will provide professional line management responsibility for a group of nursing/ AHP staff as directed by the Director of Nursing.

Head of Nursing will support and work with the Director of Nursing, Medical Director, and Lead Nurses, in the delivery of the Clinical Governance/Effectiveness Agenda across the MREH/ UDHM services.

S/he will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and relevant departments internal and external to the Hospital/Group to ensure the Hospital/Group, remains informed and responsive to the demands of the nursing, midwifery and AHP agenda.
