    Chester Zoo Sustainability Manager Role

    Summary:

    A unique opportunity to lead Chester Zoo's sustainability initiatives, driving environmental stewardship and promoting a net-positive impact on the planet.

    Role Overview

    We seek an exceptional Sustainability Manager to report to the Head of Sustainability, supporting the Executive, Senior Management team, and Board of Trustees. Key responsibilities include:

    • Developing and implementing Chester Zoo's sustainability programme, aligned with its Sustainability Policy and strategic objectives.
    • Managing projects and delivering results-driven initiatives that support the zoo's sustainability targets, including carbon reduction, waste minimization, and procurement of deforestation-free commodities.
    • Providing technical expertise and guidance to embed sustainability across the organization, ensuring effective communication and stakeholder engagement.
    • Collaborating with the Sustainability Steering Group, Leading Sustainability Groups, and Delivery Groups to drive progress towards set sustainability targets.
    • Working with a Sustainability Officer to develop and implement initiatives focused on carbon management, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement practices.
    • Securing external investment to support sustainability initiatives, managing budgets, and preparing funding applications.
    • Acting as a subject matter expert on sustainability, advising on best practices, and representing the zoo in external forums and working groups.

    The Package

    This exciting role offers:

    • A temporary fixed-term contract until 31 December 2025, with the possibility of extension into 2026.
    • Flexible working hours (40 hours/week) with some flexibility.
    • Salary: £43,672.30 per annum.
    • Opportunity for hybrid working (up to 40% remote work) and onsite work at Chester Zoo (minimum 60%).
    • 33 days annual leave, plus the option to buy or sell up to 5 days.

    Requirements

    To be successful, you will need:

    • Relevant qualifications or experience in sustainability, sustainable energy, waste management, or an environmental field.
    • Experience leading results-driven sustainability initiatives within a medium/large organization, including working with diverse teams.
    • Subject matter expertise on sustainability, including knowledge of external drivers, influences, concepts, and new technologies that could impact our sustainability work.
    • Experience developing written communications, behaviour change campaigns, plans, and business cases for sustainability interventions.
    • Ability to collate, quality assure, and present clear data for organizational and regulatory reporting on sustainability metrics.
