We currently have a new Senior Economist position to fill, providing the successful applicant with the opportunity join the CBI's economic consultancy division, CBI Economics.


The Economics Directorate plays a vital function in helping our members to understand the latest intel on the macroeconomy, how to navigate the policy environment, as well as ensuring CBI policy positions are well evidenced.

As part of this function, the Directorate has an established consultancy division through CBI Economics.

This allows us to offer our services to businesses to build their economic evidence base on specific topics of interest.


Recently, this has included an assessment of the economic and social impact of the retail sector, the local and regional footprint of the UK net-zero supply chain, research into the perceptions of the UK as a place to invest and regional analysis on how business clusters are formed.

We have delivered a range of projects and you will have the opportunity to bring your skillset to support those or break ground in new areas of economic consulting.

You will play a leading role in the delivery of these projects, supporting the Director of CBI Economics.

The role involves a high degree of interaction with CBI Economics clients, presenting analytical approaches and outputs of your research.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Delivering projects and surveys as part of a wider team, which will involve a combination of data collection, economic, fiscal or environmental modelling, social research such as business interviews and monetising social value, analysis of survey results, and report writing.
  • Drafting compelling proposals for prospective clients, including setting out the proposed methodological approach, timelines, team, and costs. You will likely be responsible for the development of one or more of these sections in a proposal.
  • Writing blog posts for the CBI website on areas you're interested in or to promote recent analysis that the team has carried out to increase the reach of CBI Economics.
  • Supporting with launch of reports and social media and how best we can present our research to government, businesses and other key stakeholders.
  • Presentation of proposals and project outputs to the team and wider CBI as well as to clients, building working level relationships with key contacts at CBI's client businesses.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest economic modelling techniques and keeping abreast of challenges businesses might be facing and solutions we might be able to offer them.

Knowledge & Experience:


  • A minimum of 2 years' work experience in economicsrelated roles, including some experience of working in a commercial context or consultancy, delivering bespoke economic analysis to support clients
  • Keen interest in using economics to drive public policy and business decisions, and the ability to work with clients to help build their evidence base to their requirements
  • Ability to undertake research and propose methodology options to solve economic problems
  • Good quantitative skills, with experience using Excel for data analysis and economic modelling, as well as excellent working knowledge of MS PowerPoint and Word
  • Ability to explain economics to different audiences and through both presentations and written work
  • Good understanding of the current economic climate and awareness of politics and government
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and reach mutual agreement with others
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive forward project workstreams
  • Experience in environmental, social or regional economics

Desirable:


  • Understanding of the current economic policy landscape
  • Proficiency in econometric software, such as R, Python, etc.
