We have an exciting opportunity for a
Year In Industry Student to join the
Commercial & Customer team.


The Northern Year in Industry Placement runs for 44 weeks and offers you the opportunity to experience our culture and gain exposure to what goes on in the rail industry.

The design of the placement is to equip you with the skills and the practical experiences to become a great manager of the future.

You will get to work in one business function, where you will work as part of the team.

The overall aim of giving you real workplace experience, so that your levels of responsibility and accountability will increase, your commercial awareness will grow, and develop your professional experience to your career off to a great start.


About the Placement


1 in 4 Northern customers now travel using AP Tickets, and this will only grow with the introduction of pay-as-you-go within urban areas and the expansion of Demand Based Pricing (AP) in inter-city and long-distance areas.


You'll be part of the team, responsible for shaping the future of Advance Purchase (AP) ticket sales at Northern, during a time of exciting fares reform.

You'll also focus on analysing revenue more broadly to identify opportunities for growth and recommend interventions.

There will be cross functional working across the wider Commercial & Customer team, in particular the retail and revenue protection teams.


Key Tasks

  • Analyse data and make recommendations for improvements to Revenue Management strategies, including planning for events and periods of high demand.
  • Collaborate with analysts from the wider Commercial Development team to include other data sets in Revenue Management analysis e.g., passenger counts and customer satisfaction.
  • Daily/weekly revenue reporting and analysis including but not limited to conductor machine collection/usage, ticket validation, refunds.

Opportunities in Revenue Growth

  • Ability to evidence demonstrable and significant revenue growth directly linked to personal actions and responsibilities.
  • Gain specialist knowledge in Revenue Management whilst learning about the direction of travel for the whole industry when it comes to fares and ticketing
  • Participate in working groups to share best practice with sister TOCs Southeastern and LNER
  • Attendance to at least one Revenue Management conference (RMAPI) which includes presentations from Revenue Management professionals across several industries e.g., hospitality, airlines, cruises.
  • Regular front line days to engage with conductors and revenue protection colleagues, sharing insights and knowledge.
  • Collaborative working with the wider business to ensure decisions are underpinned by insight taking into consideration commercial impact.

About You


As a highly motivated individual, you'll demonstrate enthusiasm; as well as an interest in data analytics, revenue management, business management and/or economics.

You will also be able to demonstrate the below:


  • Be working towards completing a bachelor's degree or master's degree.
  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential.
  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge.
  • You have strong communication skills, and you are fluent in English.
  • You have a highperformance and achievement orientation.
  • You are interested in experimentation and innovation.
  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box.
  • A keen eye for detail

It is also essential for you to:

  • Attending a university in the North of England
  • Be in your 2nd year of University and looking for a work placement in your 3rd year.
