Main Purpose of Post
To provide housing and outreach support in the community, for medium to very high-risk people with an offending history.

Key Responsibilities

  • To manage a caseload of allocated clients, ensuring that clients are seen for support visits often enough to meet their needs. Gender make up of caseload will be dependent on business needs, total number of clients is approximately 20.
  • To support clients in their homes to develop skills or provide information that promotes independent living. This work may focus on areas such as budgeting, debt management, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and many others.
  • To support clients outside of their homes with activities that promote independent living. This may include making referrals, attending appointments with the clients relating to mental health, drugs and alcohol, domestic abuse, or any other area the client requires support with.
  • To be available during normal working hours to respond to a client in crisis and help the client to successfully navigate that crisis either directly, or through information given.
  • To ensure the client maintains access to public funds (e.g. benefit claims) or support them to achieve employment where appropriate.
  • To support clients in developing interests, including accessing Education, Training, Volunteering, where appropriate.
  • To undertake lone working, where safe to do so.
  • To support clients to build a local support network, or where appropriate social network that can be accessed if the client moves on from Compass St Johns.
  • To work with the client to obtain suitable move on accommodation once they can comfortably live independently. There is no required time scale to achieve this in. Clients are not forced to move on until they are ready.
  • To adhere to all Health and Safety and Safe Working Practices policies associated with the role.
  • To create and update and a support plan for each client.
  • To maintain accurate written records of contact with clients.
  • To ensure administrative and financial recording systems are kept accurate and up to date where required.
  • To communicate with the Manager any increases or decreases in risk posed by the client, as well as any changes in frequency of required support visits.
  • To attend any meetings related to the support of the client and work in partnership with relevant agencies.
  • To contribute to the pro-social environment of Compass St Johns.
  • To adhere to relevant legislation, policy, and guidance relating to Data Protection and Confidentiality.
  • To promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in all practice involving clients, staff, and the wider community.
  • To carry out any other tasks, duties, or projects as commensurate with the general level of this post as required by the Manager.



General Information


St John's Approved Premises currently operates Compass St Johns - a supported housing organisation for people who have an offending history.

Clients are of all genders, 18 years old and above, have committed a wide range of offences, and present with multiple complex needs.


The project secures high-quality accommodation through lettings agents and landlords with Compass St Johns becoming the tenant of these properties.

Clients are then housed within the properties and provided with an allocated support worker who assists them with a wide variety of needs.


Alongside support workers, Compass St Johns employs several team members who are responsible for managing the properties themselves in terms of inspections and completing of repairs.

The support worker role does not typically involve managing the properties themselves.
