Pastoral Support Officer

The Deputy Head Teacher Pastoral


Purpose of the post:


We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual who will work in partnership with our Pastoral team to promote inclusion across the whole school.

The individual will be supporting pastoral staff and a range of young people, many of whom present as vulnerable.

  • To respond proactively to the school's on call system
  • To take swift action to reduce internal truancy
  • To provide administrative support to the Pastoral Team
  • To provide administration of internal exclusions and suspensions
  • To provide attendance administration
  • To provide Team around the School administration and attend meetings
  • To provide administrative support for Safeguarding
  • To liaise with External Agencies/Parents on behalf of the school.
  • To understand and promote the ethos and success of the school

Main Responsibilities
To reduce in school variation between groups, especially disadvantaged students.


To work with parents, particularly those who are hard to engage and whose children are considered disadvantaged (Pupil Premium, Looked After Children,, EAL, SEND, Young Carers).

To work with external agencies so that their work with Coombe students is effective

  • Support the policies, practices and priorities of the School's leadership that reflects the School's commitment to high achievement and effective teaching and learning.
  • Support the shared understanding of the importance and role of pastoral care in contributing to pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, and in preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
  • Support the Leadership Team in their drive to maintain high pupil achievement and maintain current and accurate pupil records.
  • Support the Pastoral Team in meeting the students' needs by providing accurate and timely documentation for the school, parents and the local authority.

Teaching and Learning

  • Support the pastoral team in their drive to raise standards of teaching and learning.

Student Development and Well-Being

  • Contribute to a purposeful learning environment where learners feel safe, secure and confident.
  • Support the pastoral team to manage learners' behaviour constructively and promote selfcontrol and independence.
  • Understand and participate in the contribution made by the Pastoral team to pupils' understanding of the duties, opportunities and rights of citizens; how to recognise and deal with discriminatory/prejudicial behaviour.
  • Utilise and demonstrate an understanding of Thrive strategies to support students.

Relationships with Parents, Schools and Community

  • Support the partnership with parents to involve them in their child's learning and support the provision of information about curriculum, attainment, progress and targets.

  • Managing and developing staff and other adults as appropriate.

Main Tasks

Provide Support for the Pastoral Team including being responsible for the following areas;

  • Referrals for internal/external student support and interventions
  • Collating student information from staff and electronic records and report on the information to the pastoral team
  • Supporting arrangements for internal interventions
  • Taking minutes during investigation meetings
  • Taking and interrogating student statements for investigation
  • Responsibility for the recording and securing of confiscated items
  • Taking minutes at staff and parent meetings
  • Communication with parents
  • The administration of Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs)
  • Support pupils who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion
  • Take res
