We have an opportunity for a Mental Health Support Worker to work within Northampton General Hospital, who shares our values, someone who has integrity, is compassionate and person-centred, dedicated and inclusive to join our amazing team.


Northamptonshire Mind are working in collaboration with Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, to provide service users and their family/carers with a first point of contact to the Acute Liaison Mental Health Services based within Northampton General Hospital.


Working hours and location
The role is working at Northampton General Hospital


Available Shifts:


  • Tuesday 2pm to 10pm
  • Alternate Saturdays 2pm to 10pm
  • Alternate Sundays 2pm to 10pm

Job Summary:

  • To provide a genuine mental health initial contact and support to individuals and carers who present at the Accident and Emergency departments in mental health crisis and offer them advice and support in the management of their current difficulties which would include advice or sign posting to community services.
  • You will offer support to individuals on the acute hospital wards, through providing structured interventions to support behavioral change using motivational interviewing communication style.
  • Work closely with our qualified mental health professionals within the Acute Liaison Mental Health Service, who will also provide them with clinical supervision and guidance, and Northamptonshire Mind will provide them with regular management supervision.
  • Where possible you will look to support and direct service users appropriately, engaging them in Northamptonshire Mind sessional work, therapy and lowlevel interventions as necessary.
  • You will work as part of the Acute Liaison Mental Health Service and will come into with the Crisis Houses, Mental Health Hub, and police engagements. The role of the Northamptonshire Mind and NHFT support workers is to build strong links with acute general hospitals and 3rd sector partners to collaboratively support the management of service users in crisis attending the acute hospitals across the county.
  • Working as part of the Acute Liaison Mental Health Service and will come into with the Crisis Houses, Mental Health Hub and police engagements. The role of the Northamptonshire Mind and NHFT support workers is to build strong links with acute general hospitals and 3rd sector partners to collaboratively support the management of service users in crisis attending the acute hospitals across the county.
  • There will be an element of lone working and you will be expected to adhere to trust policy and procedure with regards to lone working and use Acute Liaison Mental Health Service as a base for communication and support during their shifts.

Essential Skills & Experience:
You will need to have a strength-based approach to work collaboratively with service users, their link care coordinators, and their family/carers to facilitate the following:

  • Support achievement of a personally acceptable quality of life
  • To help guide the process of recovery
  • To help to restore what has been lost through illness
  • To enable access to community resources


You will need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for this role and if you don't already hold a valid check on the DBS update service then we will request and pay for this when you join.
