About the department

About the role

The Head of Commercial & Business Management - Alternatives is a key member of the senior team.

They have responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of all business management, financial and corporate related strategy across the Real Estate & Alternatives business.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with with the Global Head of Real Estate to create and sustain a clear strategy and, where appropriate, implementation plan for the Real Assets business.
  • Work in partnership with the Chief Investment Officer and their leadership teams to ensure abrdn Alternatives business is efficiently managed, with a clear and accountable financial plan that ensures a sustainably profitable business with an ability to invest for future growth and industry change;
  • Provide leadership, direction and accountability for business management within Alternatives, ensuring clear connectivity with Finance and other key stakeholders and maintain a clear, accountable and reportable position with regards to the Real Estate contribution;
  • Working with the Head of Real Estate and key stakeholders, consider, assess and execute on inorganic or strategic organic activities, ensuring that projects are appropriately resourced and managed.
  • Connect and build a close working relationship with the abdn Investments, Finance, Operations, Distribution and other key business partners and stakeholders; and
  • Represent Real Estate internally and be an advocate for abrdn externally with regards Real Assets and our broader business.

Skills and Experience:

  • Significant experience in large scale project management in matrixed/complex environments
  • Understanding of the investment management industry (particularly private markets) and it's challenges.
  • Experience of annual strategic planning and review processes.
  • Strong technical skills with an ability to aggregate, dissect, and interpret high volumes of data.
  • A strategic mindset and an ambition to impact on revenue and profitability.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with experience of operating at Csuite level
  • Polished presentation and storytelling skills. Media experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Mentoring & Coaching skills
  • An understanding of the Fund regulatory environment
