Head of Operations
The University of Suffolk Students' Union (SU) is a charity and membership organisation which represents and supports our students studying at our Ipswich campus, as well as across the UK and overseas.
We are student-led and provide a range of services and opportunities to students including representation, advice, events and social activities, societies and sports clubs, and student-specific opportunities.
Alongside this we also operate a social space at ourIpswich campus.
The SU is led by our elected student Presidents and is overseen by our Board of Trustees, with the strategic vision delegated to the Chief Executive Officer.
This role will be a key member of the SU's Senior Leadership Team and will have both strategic and management responsibility for delivery of the operations directorate.
The post holder will have responsibility for the performance of the directorate which includes finance, commercial, IT and estates, ensuring the SU delivers for its members and their needs.
TheSU is going through a significant growth and development period which will be shaped by a new long-term strategy.

Grade: 7
Salary:
£34,239 per annum pro rata
Hours:35 hours per week (1FTE). Open to part time hours, at a minimum of 16 hours

Key Accountabilities
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the SU's management, delivery and strategic oversight of the operations directorate including line-managing key staff members and being responsible for supporting their achievement of KPIs and directorate targets. This includes financial systems, commercial operations, and business development
- Be a core member of the SU's Senior Leadership Team, assisting in the development and operationalisation of the Union's strategy and its monitoring, specifically focussing on the operations directorate
- Produce and analyse regular management accounts and support the development of the annual budget and auditing process
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead on the delivery and operationalisation of the SU strategy in areas of operation.
- Line-manage staff within the directorate, ensuring they have an appropriate performance framework and key performance indicators that works towards the success of the strategy.
- Analyse data, produce reports, monitor the operational performance, and support the directorate to ensure areas for improvement are identified and worked on.
- Consider innovative commercial opportunities within the SU and with external partnerships to support our members' needs.
- Ensure any non-compliance with the law, legal frameworks, governance documents, and insurance policies is reported and acted upon, whilst working in partnership with the University to ensure Education Act compliance is maintained.
- Maintain and further develop the SU's links with the University to support partnership working especially for the growth of commercial operations.
- Report to the Board of Trustees at the request of the Chief Executive Officer.
- Support the Annual Budget Plan and Block Grant Submission.
- Oversee SU spaces including buildings it occupies and potential spaces.
- Manage digital needs such as IT.
- Lead on updated insurance and compliance in areas of operations.
Hours and Other information
The SU Offices are open from 8:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday.
The post holder will be expected to work at least 4 days in the office and will have the option to work 1 day (or 7 hours) remotely.
However, the post holder could be required to work outside of these times as required by the organisation and the delivery of key events and activities - as determined by the line-manager.
Time off in lieu may be taken in consultation.Additional Information
