We are the Government's advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government's 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.


About the role


We're looking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced evaluator to be part of a growing team of specialists leading our approach to understanding what works for the natural environment.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing area in Natural England, and to work at the forefront of the implementation of our Science, Evidence and Evaluation Strategy.


We are ambitious about the role of evaluation in Natural England, and the Evaluation Team is leading work on how Natural England can become a learning organisation.

We see evaluation as crucial in helping us to deliver better outcomes and in securing greater investment in the natural environment.

The work of the team includes raising capability, providing direct advice on priority evaluations, embedding evaluation in our systems and processes and playing a leadership role across the environmental sector.


Key tasks:


  • Planning and designing evaluations of high priority interventions, working closely with policy and delivery leads to do so.
  • Leading on the development and embedding of a quality assurance process for evaluation, including a new Evidence Standard for Evaluation.
  • Delivering workshops, webinars and presentations to support with evaluation planning and raise awareness of evaluation across the organisation.
  • Working with other team members to deliver a programme of evaluation capability building and guidance.
  • Developing strong partnerships with external delivery and policy organisations including with Defra, the wider Defra group as well as appropriate professional bodies, for example the Defra Evaluation Community of Practice and UK Evaluation Society.
