Position:
Animal Care Technician with Teaching Assistant

Delivery of a high quality technician service to staff and students

To provide effective Teaching Assistant support

To ensure the care and welfare of all our indoor and outdoor animals maintaining these to a high standard. To support the effective practical running of the learning experience by ensuring all students have access to appropriate equipment and materials


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organise, undertake and record daily routine care of animals to include management of feeding, cleaning, health checks, exercise, preventative treatments, emergency procedure, manage incoming livestock and veterinary intervention as appropriate, to ensure College animals needs are being met.
  • Ensure weekend and holiday care is in place when needed. Undertake weekend and holiday care as required.
  • Ensure any staff or students caring for animals on or offsite during weekends and holidays are fully trained in this role. Provide record keeping cards for those individuals to complete.
  • Support classroom teacher and students with lesson activities to include tasks such as collecting and returning outside animals. Care of visiting dogs etc.
  • Supervision and instruction of students undertaking animal care tasks as part of their workrelated learning.
  • Accompany teacher on visits including driving of the minibus if required.
  • Set up, repair and monitor equipment and manage animal house and lab.
  • Ordering of equipment and supplies as necessary.
  • Ensure students and staff are complying with health and safety and supporting risk assessment activity.
  • Cleaning and tidying away of resources in lab and animal house including daily wiping down of all surfaces, keeping netting free from dust and webs and sweeping of floor.
  • Carry out routine and nonroutine maintenance activities associated with Animal Management for example maintenance of animal accommodation and equipment. This will also include cleaning, hazardspotting, minor repairs and where needed, reporting of problems to the Property Team using the college systems in a timely manner.
  • Carry out other duties as required by the specific curriculum area including supporting the teacher with tasks such as producing resources and contact with local employers.
  • Comply with all codes of good practice and legislation associated with the work area (for example the Animal Welfare Act 2006, COSHH, RIDDOR, HSE).
  • Carry out health and safety risk assessments associated with the post.
  • Ordering and purchasing of food and materials such as bedding including collection form local suppliers. Therefore, the ability to drive with access to a vehicle is essential.
  • Willingness to train to drive the College minibus to drive for College trips and to collect larger items for animal care purposes.
  • To support other technicians as required

As a guide:

Morning routine is typically:

  • Replenish animal house for food, fresh water and substrates. Monitor for signs of illhealth and record appropriately. Let guinea pigs into the pasture run as appropriate (weather dependant). Let hens out and put away at dusk (depending on time of year). Daily spot cleaning and weekly deep clean of animal bedding including disinfectant and bleach as necessary.
  • Check indoor animals for food, water, accommodation and signs of illhealth. Feed, water and fix as necessary.
  • Exercise and socialise animals as appropriate for the species.
  • Insects require bramble replenishment, cleaning and egg collection.

Evening routine is typically:

  • Routine checks of feed water and substrates top up where necessary particularly on a Friday evening.
  • Check timers and replenish timer feeders.
  • Return all animals to enclosures where necessary and at the appropriate time _
    especially during winter._
  • Lock animals away; end of day checks on water levels and food, signs of illhealth, temperatures and lights.
Weekly

  • Full clean of animal house; secure animals, remove bedding, disinfect fomites, remove cobwebs and bins, manage the muck heap and waste disposal.
  • Bathing, clipping and grooming as necessary.
  • Replenish stick insect environment including finding appropriate food, cleaning food and accommodation, separation and removal eggs and careful disposal (nonnative species).
