CCN Recruitment are delighted to be working in partnership with the John Muir Trust, who are searching for talented individuals who would like to develop their career in a progressive conservation organisation.

A new opportunity has arisen for a Isle of Skye Seasonal Ranger to lead the management of key trailheads while engaging widely with visitors, local residents and other organisation in the wider area.


Person Specification
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitude

  • Confident in engaging with a wide crosssection of society and being proactive in approaching and engaging people in conversation and highlighting inappropriate behaviour, if necessary.
  • Practical experience desirable alongside a willingness to learn and be involved in a wide range of activities.
  • Organised, selfmotivated and able to work independently, and with Trust staff, volunteers and contractors as applicable.
  • Be prepared to work to John Muir Trust risk assessments and health and safety policies.
  • Driving licence essential.
  • Willingness to have Disclosure Scotland checks.
  • Weekend and evening working will be necessary.
  • Must be available to start as soon as possible.
  • No accommodation provided.
  • Driving licence is essential.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate and engage with visitors to promote and encourage responsible access, camping and parking in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (SOAC) Guidance and particularly the 'leave no trace' ethos.
  • Work to reduce the impact of irresponsible behaviour across the estate.
  • Conduct visitor management surveys engaging with members of the public to gather information for future planning.
  • Management of the wider estate, monitoring use, engaging positively and proactively with visitors, clearing fire sites and waste where possible and recording incidents.
  • Install and distribute temporary posters, signage, and leaflets to convey information about responsible access, in line with SOAC Guidance.
  • Working with the Trust's Property Manager report and monitor path usage, undertaking any minor site maintenance as required through the season, possibly with the use of volunteers.
  • Help deliver events such as local beach cleans, guided walks and working with the local schools to deliver the John Muir Award.
  • Support local community groups and organisations to help facilitate better tourism management and future strategies.
  • Promoting the work of the Trust, encouraging donations, membership, and engagement.
  • Follow Trust H&S procedures and policies at all times.
  • Help with any other tasks as required to assist visitor management to the Estate in particularly and the Trust's wider property management work as a whole.


This is a full time, fixed term contract of 5 months from 6 June - 30 October 2023, offering a competitive salary and benefits package.

This position is based on The Isle of Skye and a driver's licence is essential for this role.
