Description

The Hamlyn Centre was established for developing safe, effective and accessible technologies that can reshape the future of healthcare for both developing and developed countries.

Focusing on technological innovation, but with a strong emphasis on clinical translation and direct patient benefits with global impacts, the Centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing global health challenges associated with demographic, environmental, social and economic changes.

This newly created post will stimulate the development of new programmes, generate new grant income and design new courses; bringing together expertise from across the Faculty of Engineering whilst also increasing integration with staff from the Faculty of Medicine.

The expansion of this area will generate unique solutions through the combination of clinical and engineering disciplines, a key principle on which the centre was founded.

Affordable Robotics for Healthcare represents new opportunities for academic collaboration with overseas institutions, opening our research capabilities to low-cost mechatronics and robotics beyond traditional healthcare, including robotic assistants for the home and for collaborative automation in industry.

The postholder will deliver teaching in Mechatronics in the second and third years of the Department of Mechanical Engineering's MEng degree, and will contribute to our new ME4/MSc module in Robotics (introduced in 2020) for which there has been high demand.

Duties and responsibilities:

As a member of Academic Staff, you will be required to:

  • Develop a research portfolio in sensing and manufacturing that will bridge the gap between engineering and healthcare technologies, and deploy the next generation of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
  • Contribute towards developing the curriculum of teaching programmes in materials, manufacturing, sensing and signal processing.
  • Represent the Hamlyn Centre at symposiums, conferences and forums, bolstering the Centre's reputation and taking an active role in the strategic planning of the Centre.
  • Participate in Centre and/or Department administrative roles, attending relevant operational and strategic committees and working groups as required.

Essential requirements:

You should have a track record in Hardware and Software Engineering.

It is crucial that you have a national reputation in one or more of the following fields:

  • Low cost mechatronics and/or robotics
  • Domestic Healthcare Robotic assistants
  • Collaborative automation in Industry
  • Soft Robotics
  • Actuators
