Full time starting salary is normally in the range £33,348 to £43,155 with potential progression once in post to £45,737

Grade 7

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to September 2024

Part Time working for a minimum 22.5 hours would be considered with a longer fixed term end date to be confirmed

Background
We are seeking to appoint an autonomous and experienced qualitative/multi methods researcher to undertake research as part of the Childbirth Acquired Perineal Trauma (Chapter) Study funded by the NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research


The Chapter Study team brings together women, the public, midwives, doctors and academics to improve the care for women with childbirth related perineal trauma (CRPT).

This programme of research involves four interlinked work packages, with patient and public involvement (PPI) throughout, with the aim of standardising and optimising the care of women with CRPT.


The work packages involve:

  • Summarising existing research and good practice worldwide
  • Carrying out research using existing information to understand how frequent and serious any complications are
  • Developing and testing a tool to assess CRPT and help direct care more effectively
  • Working with mothers and healthcare professionals to understand their views on what is important to them, how an assessment tool might be used and how any treatment should be delivered.


The post holder will predominantly be expected to lead the qualitative work within work package 4 and to provide some additional methodological support to work packages 1-3 where appropriate.

The post-holder will be based in the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to work within internationally leading maternal health research teams at the Universities of Birmingham and Warwick, and Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.


Role Summary

  • Work within a specified research grant/project and contribute to writing bids
  • Operate within area of specialism (e.g. maternal health)
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results
  • Contribute to writing of bids and generating funding
  • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below:

  • Conduct qualitative and multi method research as part of the NIHR PGfAR funded Chapter Study
  • Identify, recruit and consent research participants
  • Conduct literature searching and reviewing
  • Collect, analyse and interpret qualitative and multi method data using appropriate methods
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/Institute researchrelated activities and researchrelated administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture

Person Specification

  • Experience of undertaking and timely completion of qualitative and multi method maternal and/or women's health research, ideally in the NHS
  • Experience of writing for publication
  • Good knowledge of ethical and research governance in healthrelated research
  • Experience of participant recruitment and taking informed consent
  • Experience of using qualitative and multi method data collection and analysis methods
  • Evidence of peerreviewed publications
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary research teams
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Coordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protecte
