Why this role is important for CPI's work:

CPI has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Scientist to join the established and growing Downstream Process Team in the role of Team Leader, based at CPI's National Biologics Manufacturing Centre in Darlington.


The Downstream Process team assists companies with purification strategies for biopharmaceuticals such as proteins, viral vectors, and nucleic-acid based products expressed in mammalian, bacterial, insect, yeast cells and/or cell-free systems The team are involved in a variety of scales from high-throughput, small-scale screening through to process scale-up and demonstration.


Reporting to the Downstream Process Manager, the role of Team Leader involves a blend of technical delivery and management of a team of scientists.

You will have the opportunity to work across a variety of product types and process scales with opportunities for networking across other technology teams and business areas within CPI and supporting a diverse set of people.

You will act as technical lead in small to medium-scale projects and deliver experimentation to develop and optimise recovery and purification processes.

You will line manage up to 5 team members and support them with training and development.

You will also assist the area manager with business development activities such as speaking with prospective clients and pulling together work proposals, in addition to providing mentoring and training to other team members.

Key activities in the role of Team Leader - Downstream Process will include but are not limited to:

  • Supervise a team, ensuring delivery of departmental goals, through appropriate delegation and providing feedback and motivation to team members. This includes providing first-line-management support, allocation of resources to ensure project delivery and short-term planning of deliverables.
  • Maintain consistent and documented compliance with all relevant Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Data Integrity (DI), quality and best practice requirements and to actively engage in hazard/risk assessment studies and discussions.
  • Continuously develop a broad knowledge/expertise relevant to downstream processing of biopharmaceuticals such as proteins, viral vectors, and nucleicacid based products expressed in mammalian, bacterial, insect, yeast cells and/or cellfree systems.
  • Lead and deliver experimentation to develop and optimise recovery and purification processes for the manufacture of traditional and novel biopharmaceutical products.
  • Agree on weekly work plans with team members, project manager(s) and other relevant stakeholders, and ensure delivery to the agreed schedule.
  • Actively contribute to a culture of continuous capability development through coaching, mentoring and/or developing colleagues across the technology team and organisation, providing insights into areas of specialism.
  • Collaboratively work with Business Development, Bid Proposal, and technical colleagues to contribute to proposal/project development and direct customer engagement. Seek out and engage in business development opportunities where appropriate.

The person we are seeking:


  • Be able to demonstrate significant, technical expertise in Purification and Downstream Processing well as compelling evidence of complex technical problemsolving.
  • Have experience in performing techniques for the Purification of Therapeutic Biologics (for example centrifugation, filtration, and chromatography) and associated analysis (for example HPLC/UPLC methods, SDS PAGE & ELISA technologies).
  • Be able to demonstrate you are comfortable using your own judgement and initiative within standard engineering / scientific practices, as well as an understanding of when to seek advice from colleagues.
