This role is part of the Food Material Sciences team within the Global Research organisation dedicated to establishing fundamental scientific understanding and discovering technologies that will enable breakthrough competitive and sustainable advantage for our categories and overall business.


The role will report into the Senior Group Leader, Food Material Sciences and will collaborate closely with colleagues in other centralised global research teams (Lipids, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Crop Science, Biotransformation, Flavour) as well as category teams (Biscuits, Bakery, Chocolate and BGCM).

The role will work in close partnership with the Food Material Sciences Technical Lead (Senior Assoicate Principle Scientist) to define the technical chellenges and strategy that will deliver the technology platforms in the area of materials science research.


The Food Material Sciences Research team undertakes a wide range of critical research projects designed to deliver breakthrough technologies in areas of physical chemistry of particles/solids materials, soft matter research including emulsions, colloids and foams, as well as fundatemental texture understanding including the role of oral processing.

Through your work, you will contribute significantly to the progress of food science and technology.

By delving into the intricacies of soft matter interactions within food materials, you will pave the way for improved food products and more efficient manufacturing processes.

Your efforts will ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and nutritious food products to consumers.


Primary Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Technical

  • Be the technical lead for projects/project tracks in the area of food materials science by organizing, executing, and interpreting assignments that yield outstanding results and impact business goals.
  • Keeps current on developments inside and outside of the company that are pertinent to the job and activity efforts through continuous education and training.

Operational

  • Mentor and guide the work planning of junior team members and supervise the technical execution and quality of their daytoday work.
  • Take new research ideas and research findings and communicate and 'sell' them to the organization for growth, quality or margin improvement.

Communication & Influence

  • Update and communicate progress to stakeholders, effectively structuring and presenting status updates / proposals to influence partners or share with higher management.
  • Operate with a high degree of technical independence, working with limited management direction.
  • Build and manage internal relationships with peers and other technical specialists in R&D.
  • Deliver results and interpretation, draw conclusions with business relevant recommendations at review meetings, write technical memos, author technical reports and IDFs (where necessary).
  • Contributes to technical strategies & influences senior management.

Leadership and supervision

  • Plan own workload and plan routine projects for junior staff.
  • Train junior members of the team as required.
  • Maintain and create an external network with relevant suppliers and academics. Represent company in external organizations.
  • Closely monitor scientific developments within the field of expertise through e.g. involvement in external scientific institutions, government bodies & industry relevant committees.

QEHS

  • Work to the highest standards of safety and quality by ensuring that appropriate COSHHs, risk assessments and SOPs are understood and followed.
  • Plan, lead and execute benchtop experimental work plans and trials following good manufacturing practice and HACCP requirements and oversee scale up to pilot and factory scale where appropriate.
  • To complete assigned quality actions on a timely manner, including review and approval. Write and approve SOPs, generation and approval of Risk Assessments and COSHH.
  • To maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environm
