The Aston School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies is looking for a Reader or Professor to be Head of Department of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.


The school sits in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and is made up of four departments: Applied Maths and Data Science, Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Software Engineering and Cybersecurity, and Electronics and Computer Engineering.

The four departments are expected to develop high-quality, research-inspired, teaching which supports the portfolio of courses delivered by the school, and the Heads of Department will be part of the school's leadership team, helping to define and deliver the school's strategy.


The school is experiencing a period of growth in terms of research activity and student recruitment in the digital sciences: computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, as well as in electrical and electronic engineering.


The Head of Department will be responsible for growing the research and teaching opportunities across embedded systems, robotics and autonomous systems, internet of things, computer hardware and power electronics working closely with other departments in the school and across schools.

They will work to expand current undergraduate provision in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (or Computer Engineering).

The Head of Department will also be jointly responsible, as part of the school's leadership team, for the delivery of teaching on the school's portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Head of Department will work as part of the school's Leadership Team to develop cross-department research and teaching. They will already have a well-developed international track record in research as well as a history of pedagogical innovation. A successful applicant will be able to demonstrate strong leadership.
