Description

The Corporate Health and Safety advisory function provides professional expert support, training and advice on matters relating to health and safety across UKHSA with the main focus on the Science Group functions and activities.


The role supports the Health and Safety Manager and Lead Health and Safety Advisor and provides support and advice to implement UKHSA Health and Safety Policy and procedures and comply with health and safety legislation.

The support and advise will help to prevent incidents and protect UKHSA employees, visitors and students.

An important part of the role is developing, building and managing relationships with the Heads of all Departments and other key personnel within their specified area.

The role also involves interactions with the regulator, the Health and Safety Executive.

  • Assist in the development, and support implementation of, UKHSA health and safety policies, procedures and guidance to ensure compliance with UK health and safety legislation and standards.
  • Build and maintain close communication with scientific, technical, engineering, estates, maintenance, and administrative staff to ensure high standards of health and safety within the relevant departments.
  • Provide health and safety advice and support to UKHSA employees queries.
  • Contribute to the corporate health and safety system of auditing and assurance in accordance with UKHSA policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to incident investigation through participation in independent incident investigations and providing assurance of the adequacy of investigations on the corporate incident management system.
  • Continuous professional development and actively maintain a high level of awareness of best health and safety practice and relevant legislation.
  • Participate and lead as necessary in emergency and unplanned events including participating in on call duty for evenings and weekends.
  • Deputise for Health and Safety Manager and Lead Health and Safety Advisors as necessary to cover absences of leave etc

The post holders will work as part of the Corporate UKHSA Health and Safety Team and assist in deliver of its objectives and priorities within set timescales to assist in progressing the UKHSA Health and Safety improvement plan.

The post holders will be based at UKHSA site Porton Down, Wiltshire and report to the Lead Health and Safety Advisor and will be required to undertake the main duties of the job (above).


The post holder will be required to work closely with a number of external stakeholders and represent UKHSA on relevant health and safety matters including UK regulatory agencies (eg HSE, Defra, Environment Agency), health and safety professional networks and sector groups and possibly internationally (eg World Health Organisation).


The post holder should be willing to pursue a program of continuous professional development and actively maintain a high level of awareness of best health and safety practice and legislation.

The post holder must be comfortable to work flexibly and operate in a highly evolving environment while UKHSA continues its transformation journey and defines its organisational culture.

Essential Criteria

  • Science Degree or equivalent laboratory experience
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety including knowledge of UK legal requirements and standards
  • Biocontainment laboratory experience and/or an understanding of biological and laboratory risk assessment and control measures
  • Experience in training, learning and development
  • Previous experience in a health and safety role
  • Able to work in a small team but also able to work independently with confidence (selfstarter)
  • Problem solver dealing with complex, sensitive
