Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity is available for two Systems Administrators in the Database Administration Team (DBA) based at Exeter or Plymouth.

Working in a dynamic environment, designing, deploying and supporting systems that form part of the UK's Critical National Infrastructure.


Reporting to the Technical Architect of the DBA Team you will be responsible for supporting on Premise and the emerging Cloud event driven Database and Middleware solutions, with a focus on Infrastructure Security and Alerting.


If you are offered a position, you will be required to undertake and successfully complete a BS7858 security screening check.

Main Responsibilities

  • Monitoring, Incident and Problem Management
  • Administering and maintaining the Oracle/SQL database tier of managed environments for optimal performance, security and reliability.
  • Ensuring that Product releases are stable and all change management, upgrade and other relevant processes are clearly documented
  • Ongoing monitoring, administration and problem management with particular focus on the Oracle/SQL databases to result in stable environments being provided.
  • Ensuring the smooth data flow between the database and other systems, nurturing database and or Middleware services and scripts using SQL, Python, PowerShell Etc.
  • Ensuring that all installations, upgrades and change approaches are clearly defined, configured and documented and successfully delivered to time and specification
You will be educated to degree level or equivalent, with practical experience of administering Databases or Middleware along with the following skills and experience:

  • Working with Database and or Middleware software installation
  • Knowledge of Database and or Middleware software upgrading and patching procedures
  • Working with various operating systems such as Windows, Linux and UNIX
  • Experience working with performance & Tuning modelling
  • Experience of Benchmarking relational databases
  • Worked in a DBA role in an enterprise environment and have extensive proven technical operational experience in this environment
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux/Windows Operating System administrative utilities and in optimisation including indexing and best practice re SQL queries
  • Proficiency with database backup technologies
  • Experience in Operating System shell scripting would be beneficial
