Band 2 Medical Laboratory Assistant
37.5 hours per week

The Microbiology Department at Dorset County Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Assistant in their laboratory.


The Department working hours are currently 09:00 to 17:30, 7 days a week and therefore includes working weekends and bank holidays on a rotational basis.

The laboratory team work closely in a fast paced and exciting environment to deliver high quality results that can influence patient treatment in the hospital, general practice or clinics across Dorset.


We are looking for someone with good keyboard skills and a passion for science or an interest in laboratory work.


Medical Laboratory Assistants support the registered Biomedical Scientists by accessioning and processing a wide range of samples including urine, swabs, faeces, sputa, other body fluids, tissues and bloods to aid the diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease.

The work is varied and involves general clinical sample processing, computer data-entry, answering the telephones, stock ordering, stock rotation and management of waste disposal.

Techniques in the laboratory are a spectrum from traditional microbiology to cutting edge assays.

  • Prioritise incoming work and complete in a time appropriate to clinical need.
  • Undertake training and participate, under supervision, in the work of the department.
  • Undertake clerical duties such as sorting post and filing that have direct bearing on the clinical work of the laboratory.
  • Data entry of patient and sample information.
  • Preparation of samples for analysis.
  • Processing of clinical samples.
  • Handle clinical material and prepare routine microbiology tests for further processing.
  • Deal with incoming and outgoing telephone calls including giving certain results.
  • Prepare specimens for despatch and distribute to reference laboratories.
  • Assist with the completion of laboratory records, updating policies and procedures using the electronic document control system or manual systems as appropriate.
  • Assist with the maintenance, calibration and control of laboratory equipment.
  • To ensure the safe disposal of used specimens and clinical waste and to assist with the daily cleaning of the work surfaces and equipment within the department.
  • To undertake absence cover for Pathology autoclaves and clinical waste disposal.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of reagents and consumables for the laboratory areas.
  • Participate in team meetings and quality improvements.
  • Assist in maintaining the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of the individual and other Team members.
  • Correctly receive and store reagents and other stock deliveries.
  • Regularly update personal portfolio to show continuing development and maintenance of relevant skills.
  • General house keeping duties such as emptying bins, keeping areas clear and cleaning down benches at the end of the day.
  • Demonstrate progress in achieving own personal objectives agreed during annual review.
