First Light Fusion is engaged in the pursuit of a clean energy source by Inertial Confinement Fusion and are looking for an Experimental Delivery Team Leader to lead the Experimental Delivery Team in the operation, development and maintenance of our test facilities.

These complex facilities, fire projectiles at speeds of up to 20km/s (44,000mph) into our targets, where the resulting shockwaves are amplified and concentrated to achieve the conditions required for fusion

In this role, you will provide a key function in the delivery of experiments at First Light Fusion.

Your primary role will be to oversee the growing team who are responsible for the operation of our test facilities, including our 2-stage light gas guns and pulsed power facilities.


The responsibility of the group will include the set-up and execution of shots, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of the experimental facilities.

The role will also include managing the development, roll-out and recommissioning of the machines after upgrade or repair.


You will use your previous experience as a team, or group leader in this field to develop the knowledge and skills of those in your team, to ensure that our experimental facilities provide a reliable, accurate and consistent platform on which to conduct experiments.

In this role you will work and coordinate with the other group leaders and other departments. You will be responsible for recruitment and management of your Group.

You will also be responsible for capability development and, in conjunction with the Head of Science Programme Delivery, advising on strategic direction.

Due to the laboratory-based nature of the role it is expected that most time will be spent on site.


Responsibilities will include:


  • Leading a team responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of fusion experimental facilities, including gas guns and pulsed power facilities
  • Engaging with the Science and Engineering teams to plan and support the delivery of experimental campaigns.
  • Ensure smooth and timely delivery of experiments, by ensuring availability of resource and uptime of the experimental facilities.
  • Lead the team through the development and commissioning of new capability.
  • Ensure swift response to breakdowns through leadership of a firstline support function.
  • Develop and plan total preventative maintenance on the experimental facilities.
  • Conduct performance reviews
  • Identify changing demands on the team and develop their capability in response.
  • Responsible for implementation and monitoring of corrective actions from 8D
- investigations

  • Writing and reviewing Risk Assessments
  • Engineering Process development

Essential

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading a team in the operation, development, and maintenance of R&D test facilities i.e., scientific test platforms, motorsport or aerospace test rigs, wind tunnels or dynamometers or military asset testing.
  • Familiarity with power, instrumentation, and mechanical systems, with extensive knowledge in at least one of these areas.
  • Excellent H&S awareness, working in hazardous environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent mechanical engineering skills.
  • Excellent faultfinding skills.
  • Good IT skills.

Desirable

  • Experience running small engineering or science projects.
  • Experience working with Pulsed Power and/or 2Stage Light Gas Guns is preferential.
  • Experience working with or around optical diagnostics.
  • PLC Programming knowledge.
  • Understanding of 5S.
  • 18th Edition.
  • IOSHH.
