The Recipe


To provide leadership to the South West operation (Bakery and 3 depots) by ensuring that we deliver the Company Health Safety and Environment strategy and ensure that, through engagement, safety is our number one priority.


The Role

  • Plan and support the roll out of the National Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy, ensuring that HSE best practice standards are developed and maintained on site that are compliant with statutory and company policy.
  • HSE budget holder.
  • Provide accurate, timely, legally correct assistance and sensible business led advice to line managers on site in all aspects of the Health, Safety and the Environment.
  • Foster a positive HSE culture by ensuring the accountability for HSE is accepted by managers and employees. Acting as a coach and facilitator for line managers and providing appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Identify HSE learning needs for the site (bakery and depots) and provide costeffective solutions to meet these needs, through liaison with the functional leaders.
  • Identify areas for improvement as a result of risk assessments, audits, accidents and incidents and ensure that these are followed to completion to ensure continuous improvement and learning.
  • Understand, monitor and maintain the site's (bakery and depots) performance against the requirements of the Warburton's HSE management system. Recommend improvements to the HSE management system, taking part in companywide improvement projects where required.
  • Lead in conjunction with line management, initiatives designed to improve commitment at all levels, to continuously improve standards of HSE to benefit site performance.
  • A member of the site leadership team fuelled by energy and commitment, championing change to drive the west country operation forward aligned to business direction.
  • Lead and develop the HS&E team
  • Demonstrate a total business mindset, collaborating skilfully and prioritising the needs of Warburtons as a whole above the interests of your own area.

Essential Ingredients

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a Health, Safety and Environment role, ideally in an FMCG organisation
  • General knowledge of all aspects of Health, Safety and Environment with a good level of expertise in handling audit from internal and external parties
  • Good knowledge of Health Safety and Environment legislation
  • Minimum qualification NEBOSH certificate
  • NEBOSH diploma or equivalent (or working towards)
  • Chartered Membership (or working towards) of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
  • IEMA Environmental Foundation certificate, for permitted sites IEMA Associate Certificate
  • Knowledge of ISO14001, OHSAS18001 management systems
  • Excellent communication skills: articulate, influential; persuasive; impactful verbal and written skills.
  • Excellent relationship builder
- establishing credibility and building rapport with both internal and external contacts at all levels.

  • Problem solver: able to find a safe and compliant resolution to issues and promote safety as an enabler not a blocker
  • Decisive: able to make decisions, in a timely manner, and be accountable.
