Job Summary:

To be responsible for the technical, commercial and line management of TÜV Rheinland Risktec's rail consultancy team.

The Team Leader role would typically be an additional responsibility for a Senior or Principal Engineer.

The time taken to deliver the role is expected to account for approximately 50% of working time, with the remainder being spent undertaking work in line with the Senior or Principal Engineer job description.

Derby, UK. Office-based, with flexible (home) working arrangements upon agreement with line manager


Technical management:


  • Coordinate and monitor the distribution and priority of tasks within the team to manage team members' workload and meet project delivery dates.
  • Oversee technical aspects of all work being delivered under the Risktec M05 banner, predominantly by rail consultancy team members but also by staff from other teams, ensuring that work is inline with the client's expectations and is to a high level of quality in accordance with the QMS.

Commercial management:


  • Using the business systems (primarily BCS), monitor the performance of the team in relation to operating budgets, goals and objectives, and report this to the Business Manager and Local Field Manager as required.
  • Oversee commercial aspects of team members' work, including proposals/quotations and the delivery of projects on time and on budget.
  • Work with the Sales Team, Business Manager and Local Field Manager to:
  • Secure the work required to achieve revenue and profit budgets (for example by ensuring that high quality, competitive proposals are prepared by team members in a timely manner).
  • Monitor market trends and identify business opportunities for the sales team to follow up on.
  • Provide input to sales and business development strategy, such as identifying key clients and service offerings.

Line management:


  • Motivate team membership through effective leadership and management techniques.
  • Communicate relevant information, instructions, objectives, and feedback to team members, both individually and collectively (through team meetings).
  • Prepare job descriptions, initiate hiring processes, evaluate applicants and undertake interviews, prepare job offers and coordinate the new starter process.
  • Decide on promotions and negotiate other role and contractual changes with employees.
  • Oversee the time management, attendance and leave bookings of team members.
  • Follow and document performance and development review processes.
  • Contribute to salary and bonus review processes.
  • Coordinate and provide appropriate training measures to new and existing team members as required.
  • Lead by example and be a role model for your team.
