The Department of Cellular Pathology at East and North Herts NHS Trust, Lister Hospital has a part
- time vacancy for a Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant, Band 3 (no weekend work).


The Cellular Pathology team consisting of Medical consultants, biomedical scientists (BMS), Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) and secretarial support staff work together to deliver a high quality service, handling approximately 29,000 patient sample requests a year.


The department is well-equipped, fully computerised, and offers experience in all aspects of routine histology, diagnostic cytology, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry.


You will be responsible for preparing and processing clinical specimens for biomedical testing, maintaining test record and assisting in the day-to-day running of the department.

Dealing with reception, and telephone queries from staff and other departments.

Maintaining clinical records in relation to activities carried out.

The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals.

Experience working in a lab is essential.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBLITIES/COMPETENCIES:

Technical and scientific

  • The receipt and first line processing of laboratory samples and requests. Paying due regard to the inherent chemical hazards posed by the reagents used.
  • To be responsible for the collection of alcohol, xylene and formalin and the disposal of clinical (including sensitive disposal) and chemical waste and sharps bins
  • To be responsible for the rotation of stocks of reagents and consumables and to alert the laboratory manager of any deficiencies.
  • Ensure that technical standards are maintained, by observing and following all Trust and departmental standard operational procedures
  • Ensure that professional standards and appropriate quality control procedures are maintained.
