Job summary:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the largest Virology departments in England.

The Virology department forms part of The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP), which is a collaboration between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The laboratory therefore provides both a clinical Virology service and a public health Virology service to the North-West of England and beyond.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivate Associate Practitioner. At least 2 years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is essential for this role.

The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.


To be responsible for carrying out the duties in an area of a section of the laboratory, to be able to rotate through all the different sections in the laboratory and to supervise and train MLAs when appropriate.

The post holder would be expected to assist in any response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g. a Bioterrorism incident or a major disease outbreak.

Working Pattern - Full Time, Part Time, Job Share, Flexible Working. The post holder is expected to participate in working as part of a team to include evenings, weekends and bank holidays.


Job description:

As the Associate Practitioner your main responsibilities will include:

  • To become competent in receiving samples, performing routine tests to completion, and reporting of results according to specified protocols and procedures, under supervision of a qualified Biomedical Scientist.
  • To be trained in the use of various techniques, analysers, machinery, microscopes, and other technological equipment, to achieve an appropriate level of competence and quality.
  • To record test results and maintain records according to local procedures and protocols.
  • Processing specimens, sub culturing of specimens, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment, assisting BMS staff in analytical techniques, and use of automated equipment within Containment Level 3 laboratory.
  • To be capable of aiding the medical laboratory assistants in the initial processing of samples, including the interpretation of clinical information and be available to cover in their absence.

Person specification:


Essential

  • At least 3 years' work experience as a medical laboratory assistant
  • Data entry and keyboard skills
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Conscientious, methodical approach to duties
  • Demonstration of good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work using own initiative and without supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in a clinical laboratory

Desirable

  • NVQ4/Foundation degree in Health Sciences (or equivalent level of knowledge).
