ROLE CONTEXT The Microbiology and Infection Service provides high quality, value for money pathology services to UHSx and other Trusts including teaching and district general hospitals, PHE and GP commissioners, forging closer customer relationships along with developing new commercial opportunities.

This position will cover two sites at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust; the Royal Sussex County Hospital at Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath.

The post holder will be expected to attend both sites as required. The post-holder will be held accountable to the HR policies and procedures of UHSx.

Microbiology and Infection Service The Microbiology service operates 24hours/day and 7days/week.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic the service is expanding and implementing more rapid testing solutions alongside our initial Covid-19 testing service and our routine microbiology.

As an Associate Practitioner, the post holder will undertake a range of complex investigations to assist in the diagnosis of disease, and monitoring of treatment.

These investigations include manual, semi-automated and automated techniques on specialised analytical equipment.

The post holder must undertaking personal continuing professional development. They may also participate in the training and development of other staff.

JOB PURPOSE Primarily the post holder will support UHSx in implementing and maintaining rapid testing solutions for SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) at both its hospital site.

This new service will require 24/7 cover to support the hospitals with the management of their patients.


This will include, but not limited to device maintenance and troubleshooting, performing testing for SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19, managing consumable stocks, documentation and communication of patient results and adherence to infection control policies.

In conjunction with the Head of Service or his/her deputy, and other senior staff, to supervise and train Medical Laboratory Assistants.

To maintain and develop laboratory services in line with the Directorate and Trust objectives, in conjunction with the operational manager and other senior staff.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES To scientifically analyse clinical specimens for evidence of infectious disease or immunity levels.


To generate pathology reports, with a high level of accuracy and presentation, which may include interpretative comments and/or suggestion of further pathology investigations, aiding the clinician in making a diagnosis and/or patient management.

In conjunction with the Head of Service or his/her deputy and other senior staff, to maintain and develop laboratory services in line with Directorate and Trust.

MAIN DUTIES To work in accordance with departmental policies and standard operating procedures, to maintain high standards of patient safety.

Participate in a 24/7 shift pattern to perform testing for SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) using rapid testing platforms.

To ensure validity of samples and test them for SARS-CoV-2 as per laboratory testing protocols. To support areas of the department beyond SARS-CoV-2 when required.

Document and communicate patient results To assist in the administration of External Quality Assurance schemes, including the preparation, distribution and result collation and submission.

To support the department in obtaining and maintaining UKAS accreditation.

To participate in IQC and other quality checks (e.g. environment monitoring) as necessary. To ensure good stock control and batch acceptance of consumables. To assist with document control using the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS).


Liaise with suppliers and other Trust departments such as Estates and IT, regarding equipment, consumables and maintenance/preventative maintenance of equipment.

Use knowledge and skills to troubleshoot equipment and minimise service downtime. Assist in maintenance of device inventory and device fault logs. Reports unsatisfactory performance of laboratory equipment to a Biomedical Scientist as required.

To record patient details and results on LIMS and other IT platforms as needed. To perform regular audits as directed by the Biomedical Scientist team. To assist with compliance with all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements, maintaining safe working practices. Liaise with service users and provide basic advice when required.


To work in an efficient, effective and timely manner and to be adaptable to change and comment on procedures or possible service developments.
