Consultation and Participation Officer - Children's Services**
Haringey

£22/hr

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will:


  • Provide intervention and support that is sensitive, understanding, reliable and of a high quality intervention in order to develop a rapport and establish appropriate relationships with children in care and care leavers
  • Work together with all relevant stakeholders to champion the views, wishes and feelings of children in care and care leavers in order to promote their best interests and deliver improved outcomes
  • Demonstrate an understanding, empathy and respect for children in care and care leavers and adhere to established standards and expectations for delivering safe and confidential services for vulnerable children in need.
  • Visit, telephone, and communicate on line with children in care and care leavers to consult in advance of their statutory review of arrangements in order to ensure that their voice is heard and taken into account as part of the care planning and decision making process
  • Make arrangements and support the Child in Care Council "Aspire" to meet on a regular basis and engage with a varied programme of activity that will aim to reach as many children in care and care leavers as possible, including those
that are so-called "hard to reach"


  • Make arrangements and support the Child in Care Council "Aspire" to consult and engage with senior leaders and elected members to shape and inform the priorities and activity of the Corporate Parenting Board
  • Offer support to children in care and care leavers before, during and after attendance at formal meetings, eg: the Corporate Parenting Board, to help them prepare and participate in a meaningful and purposeful way

Abilities/Experiences

  • Experience of direct work with vulnerable children and young people, ideally children in care and care leavers, on an individual 1:1 and/or group work basis
  • Experience of working in partnership with parents and carers
  • Experience of working together with a broad range of other people, including professionals and elected members, to promote the needs of vulnerable children and young people
  • Ability to organise and support initiatives and events for children in care and care leavers
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour using appropriate authority and deescalation techniques
  • Ability to support children and young people to articulate their views, wishes and feelings in a manner that is heard and informs planning and decision making both in terms of individual arrangements and more broadly for children in care and care leavers as a group

Qualifications

  • Relevant professional / vocational qualifications to support direct work with children and young people eg; youth work, group work, teaching assistant, learning mentor, nurse, advocate, counselor
  • Recognised art, craft, cooking, computer, music, sport, dance and any other relevant practical / activity based qualifications (or similar)

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge and skills in planning and delivering a programme of group work activities and events
  • Knowledge and skills in engaging vulnerable children and young people, including those who are disaffected and socalled "hard to reach"
  • Knowledge of the statutory care system and the disadvantage that exchildren in care experience may experience in adult life eg: poorer health and education outcomes
  • Excellent communications skills, verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of children's right and skills to ensure that children in care and care leavers are appropriately informed and supported to understand their rights and entitlements
