    The Court Services Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice is dedicated to excellent service and the provision of fair and accessible administration of justice, including court administration and security.

    The Division provides administrative support to the courts listed: Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (including Family Division), Provincial Court, Family Court, Small Claims Court, Probate Court and Bankruptcy Court. The courts act independently from the government to address individual cases.

    The Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Court Administration Office and Judicial Support. Management and operational responsibilities in this role include effective and efficient control of human and technical resources while adhering to the applications of relevant laws, policies and procedures. As the Supervisor, you are accountable for general accounting principles, and will maintain control of accounting and banking practices used in collecting monies paid into court.

    In consultation with the Court Administrator and Policy Team the Supervisor will assess and manage staff training and career development needs. Respond to new and changing legislative, policy and operational requirements by adjusting the plan to reflect new training priorities.

    The Supervisor provides technical and procedural direction in the day to day operations of a Justice Centre.

    The Supervisor is responsible for providing legal information and assistance to a diverse client group, performing quasi-judicial functions as authorized by legislation, and playing a lead role in the development of policies and procedures.

    In this role, you will also liaise with judges and the legal community to ensure the delivery of superior quality client service.

    Primary Accountabilities

    • Provide technical and procedural direction to court administration and judicial support staff
    • Oversee the management and training of staff and promote a positive, healthy, safe, and secure work environment
    • Make recommendations for improvements and enhancements to polices, procedures, and guidelines
    • Ensure that the public and other participants in the justice system receive current and accurate legal information and assistance
    • Account properly for money received into court, ensure that fees are charged in accordance with the Costs and Fees Act
    • Ensure that Occupational Health and Safety programs are followed in accordance with OH&S statues, regulations, policies and procedures, Corporate OH&S Policy and other legislative requirements
    • That office areas are safe and secure, proper records classification and retention policies are followed

    Qualifications and Experience


    You will possess an undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus several years of related experience which includes directly managing front line staff. An equivalent combination of education/experience may be acceptable.

    As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate excellent leadership skills and the ability to problem-solve using a flexible and creative approach. You will be an experienced team builder who facilitates timely service through the motivation of staff. In this fast-paced role, your ability to meet deadlines and balance priorities through careful time management is essential. Your high level of diplomacy, tact, professionalism and the ability to deal with difficult and demanding situations is key. Knowledge of an automated environment and accounting skills are essential in this role.

    Familiarity with all aspects and procedures of the court systems and a thorough working knowledge of the legislation, jurisdiction and operations of the various levels of court in Nova Scotia are considered important assets.

    The successful applicant must be eligible to be appointed as a staff Justice of the Peace. A valid Nova Scotia drivers' license is required.

    Working Conditions

    • May be required to work overtime on occasion
    • The Justice Centre may be extremely busy and noisy and be characterized by clients facing stressful circumstances – some clients are angry and may become verbally abusive
    • Considerable concentration is required to read, listen, interpret, and communicate information relating to court proceedings, policies, and procedures
    • Considerable pressure to meet deadlines, ensure the efficient functioning of the court, as well as balancing the expectations in serving the needs of the judiciary, legal profession, public and other justice sector stakeholders
    • There is a need for constant awareness of the law and legislation policies and procedures

    Pay Grade:EC 10

    Salary Range:$3, $3,885.22Bi-Weekly

    The salary rates include an economic adjustment that has been approved. These rates are effective April 1, 2025. Implementation in our HR system will occur on March 5, 2026. Until then, the current rates will apply. Employees hired during this period will receive retroactive pay adjustments in accordance with the applicable policies.
