The post holder will work within the Dental / Maxillofacial Technical department at the Denmark Hill site of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Providing support to the dental technicians & maxillofacial Prosthetist by means of pouring up plaster models, manufacture of primary dental and maxfac devices as well as keeping the records up to date, data entry and routine documentation for the craniofacial department.


The post holder will work within the Dental/Maxillofacial Technical department at the Denmark Hill site of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The duty of the post holder is to complement the role of the dental/maxillofacial technicians, who design, manufacture, modify and repair custom-made dental and medical devices.

To assist, under supervision, in the manufacture of certain primary dental devices, develop basic competency in core laboratory skills before focusing on specific areas of employment, as well as the routine documentation and administrative tasks of the cranio-facial department.


Working as part of the dental / maxillofacial team, laboratory aids will need to have knowledge of industrial regulations, health and safety compliance and meet communication standards.

You will always work under direct supervision of a registered and qualified dental/maxillofacial technician who will be responsible for the work produced.


In addition to an interview, a short practical assessment will take place in the cranio-maxillofacial unit, to assess manual dexterity.

  • Provide plaster models to laboratory and clinical staff when required, ensuring quality control measures are met. Involves handling sterilised impressions direct from the clinics to generate accurate working/study models, also duplication of models reproducing precise dental details.
  • Articulate models for treatment planning using both Denar and Dentatus facebows
  • Scan models using latest CAD (computer aided design) technology to assist technicians on site.
  • Assist with the organisation of models required for treatment planning
  • Keep designated working areas clean and tidy and consumables replenished.
  • Manage/organise individual daily workloads and prioritise multiple requests as they arise; ensuring effective time management, in line with existing lab protocols.
  • Participate in the responsibility for the daytoday maintenance of equipment used within the Fixed & Removable Laboratories, including a duty to ensure that it is kept in a good state of repair, reporting any faults to the laboratory manager.
  • Replenish disinfection baths on a daily basis and ensure items are sent for sterilisation when necessary
  • Assist in the laboratory admin and clerical work when required, including computing data and filing laboratory records. Assisting in retrieval of data to assist research programs within the department.
  • Prepare/decant (hazardous) COSHH materials for use.
  • Record and inform necessary staff of consumable items in need of replenishment.
  • Follow department policy and guidelines regarding crossinfection
  • Comply with laboratory and current health & safety and COSHH legislation. Safe handle and management of materials of chemistry. Safe operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, i.e.; high speed model trimmer/router
  • Carry out role with awareness of MHRA registration policy and departmental registration.
