The NIHR Clinical Research Network - North East and North Cumbria (hosted by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) has a vacancy for a Research Operations Coordinator.

The role will involve working as part of a team to support the set-up and delivery of NIHR Portfolio research studies at research sites across the North East and North Cumbria region.


The post-holder will have a key facilitating role in developing the portfolio of studies, aligned to a number of clinical specialties, as part of the CRN NENC core delivery team.

They will act as a link between investigators and research delivery teams with the CRN region, to ensure research is delivered to the highest standards, in a timely manner to agreed performance levels.

The post-holder will support our Partner Organisations in the timely and effective setup of NIHR Portfolio research, and so may involve travel across the region, with Regent Point and James Cook being the main offices from where you will work.


Applicants will have the skills to effectively co-ordinate the collection of relevant data essential for timely preparation of study submissions in accordance with NIHR timescales and objectives.

  • Working flexibly across sites of all Partner Organisations and Health & Care Providers delivering research.
  • Provide guidance and support for Chief Investigators, Principal Investigators and other research staff working across NENC, sharing knowledge of best practice and current legislation/guidance.
  • Ensure all research has received the relevant regulatory approvals prior to delivery.
  • Support Partner Organisation with the feasibility assessments for portfolio studies.
  • Support and advise researchers, in association with senior management, on the financial cost attribution and implications of research activity in line with the Department of health's 'Attributing the costs of Health and Social Care Research and Development (AcoRD).
  • Facilitating the timely setup of studies ensuring active management of the relevant NIHR performance metrics and ensuring barriers are resolved or escalated in a timely manner.

  • The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is funded through the Department of Health to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.
  • The NIHR Clinical Research Network is led by a national Coordinating Centre, and operates through 15 Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRNs). These local Networks drive clinical research delivery performance across the locality, and champion the role of clinical research in the NHS at every level.
  • To support Partner Organisations (POs) across the LCRN region with regard to the setup of NIHR Portfolioadopted clinical research studies up to the 'First Patient First Visit' time point.
  • To ensure all clinical research studies within the post holder's remit are setup in accordance the laws, guidelines and frameworks which govern the setup of clinical research in the UK.
  • To ensure amendments to all such clinical research studies during their course comply with and adhere to the appropriate regulatory timelines and processes.
  • To ensure all clinical research studies within the post holder's remit comply with and adhere to NIHR policies, timelines and objectives.
  • As a member of the NENC delivery team, alongside senior colleagues, support the monitoring, reporting and active management of performance against national and local objectives, in particular those relating to research management and will require expert knowledge of the research process, ICH-GCP, governance standards and the changes in the research landscape within the NHS and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
  • Work as part of the relevant study teams in all constituent NENC Health & Care Providers and other providers of NHS Services to organise and coordinate the setup and delivery of NIHR Portfolio research.
