Job summary:


We are recruiting three Communications Specialists within Defra Group Communications, working within Operations and Local Communications National Strategic Communications team facing into the Environment Agency.


Reporting into the Communications Manager, each role will support the delivery of the Environment Agency's 2025 strategy to deliver a nation resilient to climate change, a sustainable future, green growth and healthy air land and water.


Working closely with colleagues in hub teams, media, campaigns, digital, brand, strategy, and internal comms, you will support the content development for a range of channels as well as evaluation and reporting.


Developing a strong and trusting relationship with your peers and clients, you'll work closely with other Communications Specialists to make sure that jointly you are delivering against Defra's Communications Strategy 22/23.

These roles are for a fixed term of 24 months.

Communications Specialists working within the strategic communications team can be based in any Defra office in the country.


Whilst every effort is made to keep travel to a minimum, post holders will be expected to travel to attend national meetings.

Post holders will be expected to be part of a 24/7 media service rota and undertake an incident role.

Flexible within England, based at a Defra office.


Job description:


  • Supporting communications managers and specialists with specific communications plans and programmes, for example, drafting communications plans, and developing content for use in press releases and on social media.
  • Playing an active role in the incident communications response by drafting, agreeing and delivering messages via agreed channels/processes.
  • Providing strategic communications advice to clients, including guidance on brand identity and publishing.
  • Producing regular evaluation reports on communications activity, supporting continuous improvement within the team by highlighting lessons learnt / areas where improvements could be made
  • Managing shared mailboxes.

Person specification:


  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to quickly understand and distil complex information and translate it into plain English.
  • The ability to contribute to the design of communications plans and campaigns that aim to change public behaviour.
  • The creative skills necessary to produce innovative messaging and social media content.
  • The resilience and organisational skills necessary to manage competing workloads under pressure.
