The Degrees Initiative is seeking a Chief Operating Officer to be a part of a dynamic new charity working on climate change and development

About The Degrees Initiative.

The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based charity that seeks to build the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation management (SRM) climate engineering.

If ever implemented, SRM would involve deliberately reflecting away a small amount of sunlight to cool the planet and reduce the near-term impacts of global warming.

It is only in the early stages of research, but it is one of the most controversial areas of climate policy.

The Degrees Initiative is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but it believes that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions.

Degrees is newly registered as a UK charity, but it has been operating for ten years as the Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative (SRMGI) and its work has received widespread acclaim.

Degrees runs workshops in the Global South that bring new voices into the SRM conversation, and its Modelling Fund supports scientists in developing countries as they research how SRM could affect their regions.

The Fund has supported the first SRM research projects in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States.

Now that it is an independent NGO, Degrees is expanding with ambition.

Over the next few years, Degrees will offer grants to research teams in new countries, support the current teams as they develop into regional leaders, fund social science research alongside physical science, and build a well-connected global community of experts.

All of this work comes in service of Degrees' long-term goal: changing the environment in which decisions about SRM will be made, ensuring informed and confident representation from the climate-vulnerable countries of the Global South.

The Degrees Initiative does not discriminate under the Equality Act 2010 and aims to build an accurate picture of the make-up of the workforce in encouraging equality and diversity.

Responsibilities will include:

As DI is developing as an NGO, there is work to do to develop systems and processes in the business areas, such as finance, HR and IT.

The priority will be to establish these areas, whilst ensuring the usual support elements build to appropriately support the rest of the organisation as it grows.
