Role Description
The Mechanical Surveyor role is an integral part of the multi-disciplined team of surveyors within the Surveys Dept.


He or she will be working within a team of Mechanical, B&CE, and M&E surveyors providing thorough analysis of mechanical defects and compiling detailed reports/scopes of work of desired solutions and cost estimates of proposed works.


Role Purpose

We require you to:

  • Undertake general surveys and provide recommendations with regard to Survey Requests generated via the Company Help Desk.
  • Assess and provide specific insight into the condition, performance and operational risk of Mechanical systems by undertaking nonintrusive inspections
  • Undertake surveys of mechanical and saltwater systems to asset Level 4 in accordance with Asset Physical Condition Grading Methodology (APCGM)
  • Provide Technical Reports with regard to Specification 024 (Spec 024) asset types, e.g. Penstocks, Caissons and mechanical / maritime infrastructure
  • Be able to display a knowledge of and understanding of statutory requirements, current regulations and Approved Codes of Practice with regard to the above
  • Inspect and Report on Lock & Dock mechanical material state matters as per the survey schedule
  • Provide Technical advice to the Waterfront Operations, Maintenance and Project teams.
  • Ensure the Lock & Dock Infrastructure Operations and Maintenance processes are fit for purpose.
  • Attend Lock & Dock Review meetings as necessary
  • Assist with the writing of Asset Technical Specifications, Statement of Requirements and advise on generation of NB Asset Standards
  • Assist with the writing of KBS Maritime business cases
  • Input into Lock & Dock Closures Mechanical Safe to Operate Certificates
  • Input into the NB Saltwater System Investment Strategy.
  • To advise and inform the Client with regard to the material state of assets whilst maintaining and promoting best practice and value for money
  • Demonstrate commercial awareness and be able to assess value for money for asset/repair work carried out.
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of Naval Base assets based on desktop and physical surveys, professional training, knowledge and experience
  • Provide option studies, feasibility studies and cost estimates at the behest of the Client
  • Be a good communicator.
  • Provide technical support to other departments and the Customer

Role Responsibilities
As part of delivering this role, you will typically be:

  • Working with the Surveys Lead and the Mechanical Surveyors and Estates Surveyors to ensure that all planned surveys are carried out as per the Planned Maintenance survey programme
  • Carry out a wide range of surveying related duties across the Naval Base including but not restricted to:
  • Professional assessment of the requirement
  • Provide a detailed summary of the item(s) under inspection
  • Liaise with client with regard to the options available
  • Consider all H&S and Environmental issues
  • Consult with service provider / subcontractor with regard to deliverables, fitness for purpose and value for money
  • Maintain all Estate reporting mechanisms in accordance with Company related quality guidelines and adherence to H&S and environmental issues
  • Populate and maintain all electronic data collection using internal databases
  • Provide all relevant data and information for projects entered onto the FWP (Forward Works Plan)
  • Provide accurate appraisals of mechanical systems, infrastructure and utilities based on knowledge, experience and professional training
  • Be organised and methodical when undertaking surveys, preparing or managing appointments and workload priorities
  • Adopt a professional approach to all aspects of the role and be aware of the need to provide a duty of care to clients and colleagues.

Key Experience:


To succeed, you will ideally have:

  • Experience within a Mechanical and / or Marine Engineering background.
  • PC Literate, with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CAD Tools.
  • Awareness of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment tools, including Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Confined Space and Working at Height qualified essential (able to climb ladders 2030 meter with BA working with fall arrest etc)
  • At least five year's technical / surveying experience gained working in a Mechanical and / or Marine Engineering environment
  • Have a good knowledge of mechanical technology and pathology
  • To be able to operate at a fully competent level working as part of a team and independently at times
  • Be able to display a knowledge of and understanding of
