Yarl's Wood IRC, Clapham

Working hours:
Part-Time, 20 hours per week,


Must be able to work at least 2 out of 4 Saturdays

£28,800 Pro Rata


Yarl's Wood IRC (Immigration Removal Centre) is a fully contained residential centre housing adult women and adult family groups awaiting immigration clearance.

We focus on decency and respect in all aspects of care for our residents and use continuous innovation to further improve and develop our service.


As part of a vibrant Chaplaincy team, you will contribute, in such a way, as to provide a person-centred care approach, promoting a sense of hope and direction to prisoners, to support re-integration into communities and families, to further reduce the risk of re-offending.


Some of your key accountabilities will include:

  • Providing expert faith advice within the establishment and be responsible for supporting the establishment in ensuring faith groups observe their religious holy days and festivals.
  • Acquiring and distributing appropriate religious literature, supplies and materials.
  • Being able to seek and establish relationships with various support agencies and community volunteer groups.
  • Taking responsibility for ensuring and delivering awareness programmes for detainees including bereavement programmes.
  • Working closely with Security and Safer Custody to ensure issues such as death in custody procedures, Suicide and Self-Harm and Violence Reduction are delivered in line with IRC standards.
  • Contributing to and supporting detainees in dealing with bereavement by liaising with families/prisoners and other third parties e.g. hospitals, Coroners offices.
  • Planning and organising hospital visits, weddings, funerals, memorial services, in conjunction with the security department.
  • Contributing to the delivery of daily statutory duties which include interviewing all new detainees, visiting detainees in healthcare and those segregated and being available to meet with detainees prior to them being released.
  • Contributing in resettlement issues as appropriate and engage and build contacts with own faith community towards aiding the resettlement of detainees.
  • Contributing to writing prisoner reports including parole and lifer reports.
  • Being part of multidisciplinary meetings including but not limited to Safer Custody and Security

What you need to do the job


This is an opportunity for an individual who has appropriate and proven experience in the delivery of religious services, ideally in a custodial environment that reflects the needs and requirements of the predominant faiths of the resident populations.

Having demonstrable experience and skills in pastoral leadership including crisis events is essential.

They must have a flexibly approach to working as it is a requirement of the role to be able to commit to working at least 2 Saturdays per month.

The successful post holder should be innovative in approach and forward thinking.

It is essential that they have a proven high level of professionalism and competence in religious leadership to bring to the role.

There may be a requirement to work in both the male and female units within the prison.
