A vacancy will arise at the Sussex Eye Hospital for an Anterior Segment Fellow commencing 3rdMay 2023.

The post holder is expected to have at least 5 years ophthalmic experience including operative experience but would ideally be at the end of their Higher Specialist Training.

The successful applicant will be working under the supervision of Mr Mayank Nanavaty.

They will be involved in the clinical and surgical management of lamellar keratoplasty (DMEK, DSAEK DALK), penetrating keratoplasty, complex cataract surgery, medical and surgical management of external eye diseases, and acute anterior segment conditions.

There are facilities at the University of Brighton for basic science research.


This post offers an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology team at the Sussex Eye Hospital under the supervision of Mr Mayank A.

Nanavaty, Consultant (Cornea & Anterior segment). Mr Nanavaty carries out complex cataract, corneal and specialist anterior segment surgeries.


The Sussex Eye Hospital is a tertiary referral University teaching hospital, which receives acute and chronic anterior segment and complex cataract surgery referrals from a wide geographic area.


The successful applicant will gain experience in lamellar corneal transplantation (DMEK, DSAEK and DALK), penetrating keratoplasty, routine and complex cataract surgery, ocular surface surgeries including pterygium surgery, stem cell transplants, and medical and surgical management of external eye diseases.

The Fellow will be expected to engage in research and development. There will be opportunity to build up their academic CV if the fellow has an academic appetite.

The Fellow is expected to help with administration and teaching, with regard to all aspects of the corneal service.

This includes reviews of corneal inpatients, scheduling of waiting lists, coordinating follow-ups, maintaining and updating the database, assist in running of the Research Office, etc.


The fellow will also be on the general on call rota, and will support sessions in eye casualty where we manage a lot of corneal pathology.

The Sussex Eye Hospital is part of a Major Trauma Centre (BSUH) and specialist Tertiary Ophthalmic Unit.

It serves a population of approximately 500,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princes Royal Hospital.

The sub-specialist referral population is over 1 million.

The Sussex Eye Hospital is in close proximity to the Royal Sussex County Hospital which provides specialist investigations and liaison with other disciplines.

It is located opposite the main Royal Sussex County Hospital and next to the Postgraduate Centre.

It is part of the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust and plays an important part in undergraduate and post graduate education and training.


The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Assisting in all aspects of theatre, inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Pre and postoperative patient care.
  • On-Call duties (On-
Call Commitment: 1:8) Registrar on-call duties (non-resident)

  • Research and clinical improvement projects: the fellowship has a strong research focus and the postholder is expected to take an active role in ongoing and new research studies and clinical improvement projects.
  • Teaching of medical students during their ophthalmology rotation.
