At Heathrow, our ambition is to set the standards for airport safety and ensure that everyone who works at or travels through Heathrow can get to their destination and return home safe and well.


We are seeking a Health and Safety Advisor to work on Airside, in a crucial role in helping the business to manage risks, safety performance and continuously improve.


You'll be responsible for delivering Health & Safety advice and assurance across Heathrow Airside, building effective relationships with stakeholders including operational safety leads, Trade Union H&S Representatives and the wider Fire, Health & Safety Team.

You'll also get involved in the delivery of improvement projects, all whilst developing your Health and Safety career in this dynamic safety environment.


Your role will involve:


  • Ensuring Airside Operations understand and are compliant with Heathrow's standards for working conditions, equipment and welfare arrangements.
  • Support the understanding of safety culture, using the continuous improvement toolkit to develop action plans to strengthen maturity.
  • Ensuring risk assessments are conducted and required controls implemented.
  • Provide the link between other departments (e.g. Engineering, Baggage Operations, Finance, Legal) to ensure that more complex crossdepartmental safety issues are mapped and managed.
  • Developing an indepth understanding of Airside, including operational challenges, changes, stakeholder relationships, safety cultures and colleagues' attitude to H&S.
  • Management of H&S risks, supporting the delivery and adoption of Heathrow's safety management system, providing technical advice on complex technical risk assessments and advising on the introduction of new ways of working, processes or equipment.
  • Supporting with the delivery of Safety Improvement Plans (SIP).
  • Conducting H&S audits and assurance, driving delivery of actions identified, escalating delayed actions and advising on alternative mitigation measures
  • Oversight of compliance for mandatory training, identifying training needs based on assessment of risk and accountabilities.
  • Ensuring that Trade Unions and colleagues are involved in risk assessments, action planning, and continuous improvement activity
  • Supporting H&S communications across business areas, ensuring a consistent drumbeat of messaging, relevant to the risk and performance in each area
  • Supporting Incident reporting and investigation including making sure everyone knows how to report close calls and incidents, and conduct incident investigations, providing advice and coaching to Safety Leads and Operational Managers on good incident investigation processes.
  • Submit reports to relevant bodies, in line with existing regulations (e.g. RIDDOR).
  • Oversee the quality and close out of investigations, escalating issues and supporting the investigation of more complex/serious incidents.
  • Share knowledge of risks and lessons learned from incident investigations and best practice

These skills are essential:


  • Safety professional with considerable H&S experience gained ideally in a 24/7, highvolume footfall environment, e.g. transport, manufacturing.
  • Experience of Airport Operations, Aviation Security or Airport Commercial operations is highly desirable.
  • Extensive experience in providing H&S expertise, advise & assurance as a service.
  • Proven experience with running incident & accident investigations, complex risk assessments
  • Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, preferably as a Chartered Member (if not, an H&S Adviser would be expected to work toward and achieve Chartered Member status, for which training would be provided)

Ideally, you'll also have:


  • National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent)
  • Holding (or working towards) National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent)
  • National Certificate in Fire Safety (or equivalent)
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, including effective stakeholder management ideally within a complex, unionised environment
  • Sound analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present data in a meaningful way.
  • Good understanding of continuous improvement processes and/or project management processes
