Description

We are looking to recruit 2 Pharmacy Support Workers within our Acute Medicine Team following further investment in the Pharmacy service.

To work as part of the Acute Medicine Pharmacy Team.

To provide high quality, accurately dispensed medicines to patients admitted to Acute Medicine areas.

To promote the use of patients' own medication in accordance with the Pharmacy procedures.


To work in close partnership with the Acute Medicine Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians to help ensure any pharmacy related problems are resolved.

To promote the use of patients' own medication in accordance with the Pharmacy procedures.


To support the management of medication across all Acute Medicine areas, specifically; in ensuring safe and secure storage of medications in drug trollies, treatment rooms, CD/RD cupboards.


To liaise with nursing staff across Acute Medicine areas to ensure ward stock medications, discharges and patient specific medication requests are triaged, prioritised, and processed safely and efficiently.

To be an ambassador for pharmacy services.


Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 1.6 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.


The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services across the wider region.

Ensure each patient is checked to see if they have brought their own medication with them into the hospital.

Check patient's own drugs for suitability of use. To liaise with patients, their relatives or carers, to encourage the use of patients own medicines within the hospital.

This includes contacting relatives to encourage them to bring in medicines from home for the patient as soon as is practically possible.


To indicate on the patient's prescription chart if the patient has brought their own medicines and blister pack details if relevant.


To work closely with the Acute Medicine Pharmacists and support nursing staff to identify patients on critical medicines and ensure these are supplied in a timely manner.


To identify upcoming discharges, liaising with Acute Medicine Pharmacists and nursing staff and ensure they are dispensed in a timely manner in order to avoid delays.


Dispense any items required for a patients' prescription within agreed time limits to ensure prescriptions are completed in a suitably prompt manner.

To have an understanding of critical medicines and to be able to prioritise the dispensing of these.


To be able to recognise controlled and restricted drugs brought in by patients and ensure they are stored correctly in line with the trust policy.


To complete daily checks on the Pharmacy returns bins ensuring any medicines are transferred back to the patient or returned to pharmacy for destruction as per policy.


To aid in the management and top up of ward stock for the Acute Medicine areas - specifically AMU and SSU.

To maintain adequate stock levels, prevent overstocking, ensure good stock rotation and expiry dates are checked.

Undertake temperature monitoring of medicines storage for both ambient & fridge temperatures ensuring the safe storage of medicines. To escalate any temperature excursions to the Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician to ensure remedial action is taken.
